Check with your local 4H chapter. They'll have the laws translated from legalese into real English.

That's awesome! Showing rare breeds is a great way to raise conservation awareness. I was absolutely floored to see how many animals are on the Livestock Conservancy's "Conservation Priority" list - chickens, rabbits, geese, horses. The Mammoth Jack Donkey bred by George Washington to improve...

Before you offer him to someone as a potential dinner entree, check out this website. https://livestockconservancy.org/heritage-breeds/heritage-breeds-list/spanish-chicken/ The White Faced Black Spanish chicken is listed as "Critically Endangered" by The Livestock Conservancy. If you can...

Welcome Aboard! I'm in Cecil County, MD. My backyard flock is mostly Nankin bantams, with a few random rescues for variety. My birds are pretty much spoiled pets that just happen to throw some eggs or chicks my way, on occasion. If anyone had told me I'd keep chickens around as eye candy and...

Check the ordinances for the areas abutting yours. If they are looser than your 100 foo rule, you can use those as guides. Also, contact your Agricultural Extension Office and 4H coordinators. You'll likely find support there. Good Luck!

Welcome Aboard! And right at the beginning of hatching season, too ... perfect timing!

Before you buy an incubator, check with your local Agricultural Extension agent. They're usually in charge of 4H and classroom hatches. For a long time, ours loaned out small 'bators to every kindergarten classroom that wanted one. When the pandemic hit, classroom hatches stopped and never...

My main coop and run - housing up top with access to the run underneath. I love it!

If you can't find a coop, look for a used playhouse. If you're willing to haul it away yourself, you can often find them for free. They make a fun, easy conversion project!

It's gotten so bad that my yard and my gravel drive "squish" about the same! All the mud has taught our dog a new command, though. As soon as she comes in the back door, we tell her "Shower!" She goes straight into the shower and waits patiently while we rinse her feet and whatever other...

Contact your local 4H coordinator (Agricultural Extension Service.) I'm sure there's a 4Her with goats to sell. The kids (pun intended?) are usually pretty good about caring for their animals - and by supporting them, you'll be supporting a great organization.

I up-ended a couple of large logs (~12 and 18" high) in my run's wet-spot. It gave The Boys a place to sit up high and dry, but also gave them a new game to play ... King-of-the-Stump. They've entertained themselves for two days, now!

How's a couple of hours north of Baltimore? By BYC standards, we're practically neighbors! I have a small flock of Nankin Bantams (mostly cockerels at the moment!) I've also got a handful of assorted other banties, including a starter flock of Sebrights I'm hoping to find a 4H home ... if I can...
