Totally agree, Sydney Acres, because as mentioned by a dairy farmer I know, and who's in the same boat as poultry keepers, finding quality feed is a crap shoot at best. Like she said, we're at the mercy of these feed mills / stores, and all we can do is keep, or try to keep ahead of their...
It's been a week since I wrote about (where I can get quality feed with 22% or more protein) buckeye dietary needs...well, I visited a feed mill 2 hours from me, an outfit run by Mennonites; the facility is really clean, and well organized, and very impressive when compared to the organic...
I value all opinions! I'm an organic farmer too, small scale, and thought feeding the birds organic feed was great until someone commented on how small my 1 year old bucks are. They thought they were bantams. The organic feed by me is so ground down and so powdery the birds choke on it. So I...
I find Jeff Lay's formula to be excellent advice, but my problem is where do I find 50 lb bags of 22-24% chick starter that also contains animal protein? The feed stores in my area have replaced animal protein with plant protein in their formulas which makes it really difficult NOT to serve...
I tend to agree with Minniechickmama--slow tail feather on a Buckeye leans toward chick = cockerel, but I'm stating this from my experience only since that's how mine ended up. I like the article written by Don Schrider http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/6-3/determining_sex_in_chicks/ since it...
WOW! Nice looking babies.--you have 12 Buckeyes total? How many pullets/hens do you have, need to set a nice amount of eggs? I ask because only 3 of the 5 pullets I have with my rooster produced eggs nice enough to set (and waited for without them getting being too old).
Here are my 7 Easter-ish Buckeye angels....hatched April 19th; 2 were mal-positioned, but made it thru with no problem. It's my first attempt at hatching eggs from my flock (12 eggs set, 5 were infertile). These babies are the sweetest, most calm chicks I have ever met. Is everyone's Buckeye...
Wow you guys, thank you for all your answers! I checked the rooster's spurs, Walt, and they're not long at all, thus making me wonder why all the missing feathers on the girls. I watch the girls, and it's not like they're pecking each other.
Minniechickmama, Sydney Acres, it's funny you...
Does anyone here have a problem with their Buckeye roos ripping back feathers off the females when it mates with them? All 5 pullets (in the pen with him) have their backs near the tail mangled or ripped out exposing raw skin.
He's headed for the dinner table, but I wonder can that behavior be...
HI! Thank you for your reply...I'll have to check out that scale you're talking about. I would think I'd have to get a scale big enough to hold and tare the bucket/container.
You know, I spoke too soon, because the very next day of my post here, one of my girls laid an egg, and she's been...
Us too! My husband built me a Whizbang plucker and I swear I wouldn't process chickens without it. I think plucking by hand would totally turn me off from slaughtering and butchering--too long, and really messy. We use a galvanized garbage can for the scalder (my husband epoxied the edges so no...
Hi all, I'd like to ask a couple of questions...my Buckeye angels passed their 20 weeks of age on 10/10..I have 2 roos, and one unfortunately is showing some white on the TIP of his tail feathers (mail tail or sickles) and white tip on a secondary wing feather (one side only). Will he lose this...
