SOP stands for Standard Of Perfection, basically the traits and characteristics each breed should possess.
Marans are a fairly new breed in the US. They are just now being accepted by the APA (Black Copper is already accepted and Cuckoo has qualifying meets coming up next year). There are...
I do about the same as Pawtraitart. I sell chicks and Pullets and the extra roosters fill my freezer every year. Really it's all about advancing and improving the line of birds I have. I am working with a breed that typically has alot of issues (Marans) and it's very interesting to me to try...
Anyone else have any eggs in the incubator yet? I have a batch of 45 Blue Copper/Black Copper and White Marans eggs that are due to hatch on or around the 30th. I'm excited!! Here are a couple of pics of some of the parents.
Thanks for the comment on my website. I really need to find some time to update some things including some pictures. My girls (the ones in my profile pic) turned 2 Monday and basically dictate how I spend any free time I may have....not that I'm complaining one bit....I wouldn't want it any...
I had a pretty big response to an ad I placed and are now down to just what I'm keeping on the Blue Coppers. I do have 2 spares I'm growing out and it's possible that in October I could be convinced to part with one so contact me then.
Your welcome. Let me know if you have any questions as they develop. An update on their progress occasionally would be great. And remember if you end up with to many Roos I will take some back in trade for new chicks and another shot at pullets.
House of Chicken- I should be able to accommodate you on both the chicks and the eggs. Let me see what I can work out with Susan and I will contact you with the details.
Shawn how many chicks do you think I should send with her. I think you have a better idea of attendance than I do. I have a large hatch that I put in for this event plus I could send some older chicks as well. Let me know what you think.
I'm pretty sure that Michelle from QCU Poultry will be there with some Marans and she has fantastic birds. If she's not her farm is in Paul Idaho which would make for a nice side trip to pick up some birds.
Well I have pulled every string I know how to pull in order to make it but it's not going to happen. I'm to busy with Family and work. I would love to find someone from my area (Boise) who is going though, who would be willing to take a load of my chicks with them. I would be willing to make a...
Michelle does have fantastic Marans and I highly recommend you make the trip!!! I have some Blue Copper Marans that just hatched here in Emmett if your interested in adding some blue to the mix.
Hey Rusty this is Rick (also in Emmett). I breed various types of Marans. While I wouldn't claim that all my birds are show quality (Marans are tough) they are a decent starting point.
Anyways Welcome to BYC, and welcome to Emmett!
A month apart is a pretty big gap for chicks to be brooded together. I will also have some point of lay pullets ready to go about the same time (march). I have over 50 growing out now that should begin laying in march and April.
