    September Hatch-A-Long!

We're veyr excited today. My 4 year old daughter has 5 eggs from her hen in the incunator and 2 have pips so far! She was so sad last month when her hen's egg died a few days before hatching. The hen is a spangled old english game bantam named cookie stripe lol. The father of her chicks is a...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Quail are set for hatching on the 4th and chickies due to follow on the 7th. I'm a little worried this time though as I only saw movement in 3 of my 14 chicken eggs.... I was expecting more of a show tonight!

Day 12 for me. Last night I took 3 quail eggs out. 2 were infertile and 1 was stinky. That leaves me with 19 and all 14 of my chicken eggs are still doing great!

I hope they hatch well for you! My husband does not believe that the more eggs in the incubator the better they do ;-). But I just set 40 for september lol. I'm down to 36 because I had 4 infertile eggs. Good luck to us all!

    September Hatch-A-Long!

You're right. Dry hatching is adding little to no water to the incubator until the end for hatching. Here in pa though, in august, I couldn't have gotten my humidity lower than 30% lol. So I just kinda let the eggs go with whatever the room was at and that worked out fine for me. I figure...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

I had a wonderful hatch in august and I think it's because I did a dry hatch. My humidity was between 35-45% and I bumped it up to 70% for the last 3 days.

No washing. It can force bacteria into the eggs through the poors anc will remove the bloom which is the protective cover on the eggs. I've got my fingers crossed for you this month! And I kinda turn mine. Like once a day I tilt the carton they are in to the oposite side if that makes sense lol.

    September Hatch-A-Long!

This is exactly what I did. I had my main group of eggs and added a few more over the following few days. I did a dry hatch, which august in pa means 40% humidity lol, and bumped it to 70% once I saw the eggs begin to wiggle. All my eggs that made it to lockdown hatched :-)

Welcome to the chicken world :-) I too started with RIR! 10, 2 roosters and 8 hens. They were supposed to be all hens ;-). And guess what....my second breed was barred rocks just like you! My third round was silkies, cohins, and a turkey lol. I still have one RIR hen from my first group...

Does anybody have advice on how to candle blue eggs? I've never had an egg this hard to see in to... it's 5 days old today and I can't even see faint shadows.

A polish x silkie would be cute!!! And don't count the brahma out lol. My little cohchin bantam was quietly breeding for at least a month before he EVER crowed and like I said...I've never once seen my sebright breed a hen and he is now a proud papa lol

Any guesses on what your silkie mixes will be? My roo choices are sebright, d'uccle' silkie, old english game, or bantam cochin. My other roos are simply too big :-)
