    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

My second pullet started laying two days after the other one. Her very first egg was a double yolker I believe (haven't cracked it open). They are the green eggs in the carton - the darker green is from the black/red hen.

I didn't see movement in it, and she is still sitting on it trying to hatch it. I don't think the chick/embryo inside is alive anymore but i don't see the harm in letting her sit on it another day.

My 7 month old Australorp/Ameraucana/White Leghorn mix breed hen that went broody is now a first time mom! I gave her 6 eggs, 2 of them turned out infertile(clear) and I had 2 quitters at different stages but two of them hatched very happy and healthy. I added a heat lamp to the coop just in...

My 7 month old hen decided to go broody this week. Do you think chicks hatched nov 21 would be too old to try to have her adopt them as her own?

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Well my hatch is complete. I had 12 out of 13 hatch, the 13th stopped/died in the shell somewhere between lockdown and hatch day. #12 pipped and started to zip but was stuck most of the day until I finally decided it was time to intervene. I helped it hatch and the blood vessels were...

Thanks, I read that article before but it seems the best advice is wait and see whenever you have temp issues up or down for whatever length of time. Anyhow, I am happy to report that out of 13 eggs every single one of them went into lockdown though I didn't candle on lockdown, I candled the...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Yesterday I checked my eggs and went to sleep around 9:30 AM. It was VERY windy and the power was out when I woke up around 4pm. The incubator temp was down to 62 degrees, not sure how long the power was out for but I imagine a while, I got the incubator plugged back in and warming up around 5...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Soooo I set eggs last Monday then this Thursday my little Ameraucana/leghorn/Australorp mix decided to go broody on me... She is only 5 months old - is it normal for hens to go broody at such a young age? Do you think I can trust her to set eggs? I was thinking about moving 5-8 of the 13 eggs...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

I keep hoping my girlfriend grows as fond of the chickens as I am. Maybe seeing this next hatch grow up will win her over.
