Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this! I hope you catch that predator and deliver justice upon him quickly.

And these are from my primary SGD breeding group. You can see that the rooster, Squiggy, is significantly larger than Wesley, even now that Wesley's gained so much weight. And here's one of my more robust girls:

Right now I'm still waiting for the rest of the SGD girls to resume laying, so no signs of broodiness yet. I made note last year of which of the hens showed broodiness, so if they repeat the pattern this year I may have one for you. Otherwise, I will be hatching more SGD chicks throughout the...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Here are the two I'm currently hatching eggs from: This guy, Wesley, was actually on my cull list in spite of his amazingly snuggly personality because he initially didn't develop very well. As soon as I separated him from the rest of the flock I discovered that his poor development had been...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Choosing a heritage breed to work with has got to be one of the toughest choices to make. You're just reminding me of how grateful I am to have my Silver Grey Dorkings. It's getting harder and harder to find quality stock to work with as fewer and fewer people make the choice to put in the time...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

My goals this year are to primarily keep doing what I've been doing, because I'm getting really good production results. I've managed to breed some large, hardy NNs that have also proven to be outstanding layers. At this point I've got a lot of good stock to work with, so I just want to...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Almost three years ago I hatched out Bielefelders, thinking they would be my preferred breed. They're lovely birds, very tame and friendly, and my absolute favorite rooster is my Biel rooster, Bosch, who has been granted "pet" status because he's so sweet and affectionate with me and a good...

I have one DC/CX mixed hen that I always planned to cross with my NNs, but she so rarely lays eggs that it's proven impossible to breed her. She's HUGE and honks like a goose, but in the past year she's only given me about 60 eggs and half of those she just dropped on the ground while she was...

He's impressive! And I swear he's smiling in this photo.

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

My NNs lay every color egg in the chicken egg rainbow, and that includes ones with single combs, not just NN/EE crosses. They're VERY good at free ranging and my NN roosters are exceptionally alert and sound the alarm quickly at the first sign of a potential predator. All of my birds range in a...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

For egg and meat production I simply must sing the praises of the Naked Neck Turken. They're exceptionally hardy, healthy birds, have really good growth rates, and are surprisingly good layers. My top NN laying hen laid 250 eggs per year on average each of her first two years, and has laid 133...

WHOA! Fourteen pounds???? Put a saddle on that boy and ride him! LOL! Sounds like a very good contender for meat breeding. Good luck! I'm excited to see how his offspring turn out!

LOL! I've been battling a broody NN lately. I've got roughly 70 laying hens of age, and I'm lucky to get a dozen eggs per day because of winter laying, molting, and now a broody. Good grief, girls! Earn your keep! LOL!

:hugs I'm so sorry to hear you've been having such a tough time. I hate when life throws us those negative curve balls, but Turk's a really good guy. I'm sure he'll understand. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and focus on doing what's right for you. I hope as time progresses you will...

Well, what d'ya know? I finally figured out how to find this thread when it's been inactive so I can actually post on it. *Sigh* My learning curve for the "new" BYC has been slow to say the least. Anyway....on the topic of egg production, I was thrilled to discover upon running the numbers...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I do ship eggs, and so far all of my customers have reported high fertility rates (even the ones I shipped from here in AZ all the way to Maine). This time of year isn't good for fertility though. Right now nearly all of my chickens are in heavy molt. Out of over 70 hens/pullets, I'm lucky right...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I have found that the stronger the NN gene in my birds, meaning the closer they get to homozygous, the smaller they seem to be. I increased the genetic diversity of my flock in the hopes of counteracting that tendency in case it was simply prevalent in the genetics of my starter flock, which is...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Thank you! I originally settled on the NNs because of their tolerance to our extreme summer heat. I didn't know I would totally fall in love with the breed. They've given me everything I was looking for, from being great egg layers (of multiple colors of eggs) and outstanding meat birds, to...

This is another of my young breeders, Tank. He's turned out to be a very pleasant surprise and outstanding rooster to his girls. I had my doubts about him while watching him work through his adolescence, but he's proven to be a quick study and quite the gentleman.
