    Day 18.....Lockdown

good job helping, sounds like you waited until the perfect moment to intervene. I also believe in helping, especially with shipped & artificially incubated eggs, since they have already had so much intervention on my part, I think helping when you know some are dying/shrinkwrapping is the right...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

yay! it works really well! I like to candle them day 18 and 19 and feel like I know how progressed they are, or how much clear is left. I like to try and predict the first pipper ;) sometimes it works.. I increase humidity when I find the first internal pip, not necessarily external. although...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

that is the very last part of the chick to form.. sounds like it was behind by a day or so. it draws the intestines into it's abdomen, then the yolk and all of the veins, then forms skin over the top and closes as a "navel" this whole process takes places between the time that it pips...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

darn it... so sorry was the egg incubated with the large end up? usually keeping it upright will put the chick in the proper position

    Day 18.....Lockdown

here is a pip (external): after the pip, the chick takes a rest and the rest can last 12-24 hours. when they are ready, they will begin zipping. zipping can take 10 minutes or a few hours! after the zip all dried out :) these chicks I just hatched yesterday/today!! they are about 1...

here is a link for troubleshooting: http://msucares.com/poultry/reproductions/trouble.html it is just sooo hard to say... off the top of my head, I would say humidity was too high throughout incubation at 55%.... I keep mine around 30% for the first 18 days. the idea behind dry incubation is...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

You can candle them in the incubator to look for an internal pip, it should happen around d19-20. it can be another 12+hrs before they externally pip after internally pipping. it will look like a shadow on the inside of the air cell probably in a triangle shape

    Day 18.....Lockdown

were the new eggs shipped? I use a practice with shipped eggs where I don't turn them for the first 2 days in the incubator. so I would say, no harm in not turning at first... you could remove the turner, and move your eggs to egg cartons. That way, you could prop up 1 side of the egg carton...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

this chick looks really wet - watch it closely because as that dries it will glue the chick to the floor possibly - it looks like there was leftover unabsorbed egg white? is that what the wet is? is there any yolk on the chick? do you have Gro Gel? or any Sav-A-Chick electrolytes/probiotics...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

Yeah.... it's kind of a waste, since I usually hatch only 20ish at a time! I have seen how some people will cut up the wafer and save it, and split up the dilutant bottle. I took one look at that wafer and no way was I going to handle the live vaccine, let alone have a safe place to store it...

nice! I can never time mine perfectly like that but it sounds like a lot of fun! I have been enjoying the jan/feb hatch-a-long thread, I may have linked it already, if not everyone else welcome to join us https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/846539/jan-feb-2014-hatch-a-long/910#post_12659593

    Day 18.....Lockdown

Oh nooo! I'm sorry.... Depending on how long it was turned up they might stand a chance you never know.... it takes a little bit of time to raise the internal temp of the egg, 104F internal temp is considered too high.

    Day 18.....Lockdown

You will hold them very very soon! I usually find a window to snatch them out, I say it's a good sign if you have that many pips going without a break! I usually clean stuff to take my mind off it... I cant concentrate on reading a book but if I do/create/clean something I can get into it...

    Day 18.....Lockdown

It's okay! I know it seems bad that they are running everywhere, but I see it as an alarm clock for the other eggs. Get up , get up, it's time to come out! When you do pull them out it almost seems... oddly quiet. ;) They won't hurt anything by running around or on top of the other eggs. Don't...
