Yes, all those things increase solar intensity. I do think that buying a UV resistant tarp would help though. The ones you have may be of that type.

217 days of sunlight for SC, 286 for tucson. Also the light has more energy in Tucson: I have similar problems at my place--we are that orange area just up from the Delta in California. Plastic water fountains do not last a summer here. It is likely worse in Arizona for sure.

The hens did not go broody. Broodiness has been bred out of most breeds--You will need to buy a good incubator if you want to hatch since it sounds like you do not have broodiness in your flock. Silikes and cochins are good at hatching and raising chicks. Some breeders will keep several to...

I have read that too. One point that George was making was that all treatments have a danger to them. DE can damage lungs so neither the chickens or us, as the person applying it should breathe it. There is a new poison that will kill mites called Spinosad. It is listed as having low...

From what I have figured after looking into calcium for males, it takes two plus years for it to kill them. It is slow and if you do not expect to keep them more than about three years(They lose fertility as they age so likely you would not keep them that long), calcium will not be too bad or...

She may be fixin to molt. We are getting into the time when year to year and a half hens will be molting, and I have heard about some starting already this year. Remember, some breeds will not look bad when they molt the first time--you will see extra feathers though.

Last fall during molting I used Nutrena feather fixer. It is seventeen percent protein but has other things added to it. Purina has re formulated their feed and have added pro biotics and amino acids. for both layeena and flock raiser. My Heritage breeds to very well on both and the feather...

Too much protein will actually lower egg production too. Layer is 16 to 17% protein because of this. It will not hurt to supplement with calf manna several times a week though. Good information on the carbs!

Toe punch and spiral bands. I have a group of 4 with bands and one lost a band after two years. If worried, change the bands every 6 months and check regularly. They stay on much better than zip ties.

I just read that ILT is not transmitted through the eggs. Can you get hatching eggs?

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Yes and I think the third one is what the hatcheries use so the will infect a non vaccinated flock. It happened here in California when someone rescued some battery hens.
