Hey sorry to hear about your hatch. I have a suggestion that will keep you from losing chicks to waterers/drowning. Do you know those little bright colored stones that walmart and other places like dollar stores sell for crafts? They are about 1/2 inch to 1 inch in length. They fit neatly...

My first Elliot's Pheasant eggs of the season... in lock down this morning. And the countdown begins... tick tock tick tock tick tock lol! This is my 'nemesis' hatch by the way. For whatever reason, this particular male responsible for the male side of these eggs hates my guts and has since...

Hey :) Sounds like you are doing alright so far.
Candler: Go to eBay and search for exactly that. You'll find a lot of LED very inexpensive very bright alternatives. I found a commercial grade one that does everything from button quail to ostrich for 1/3 of its retail price. I also bought...
After a while you get used to it. In the beginning it's like "OMG! Did I do it right? Oh no! What about x factor? What about y...?! WHAT ABOUT A????!" lolololol :))) We all go through it. My best suggestion to avoid hatching jitters is simple... Watch a real chicken brood their eggs...
Terry cloth works great! Also, if you have a ramekin, fill it with water that is as close to the temp as the incubator. Then you don't get temp fluctuation.
It just sounds cold I guess. Broke my heart my first year hatching that's for sure. But everything from ostrich to button quail applies. If it doesn't happen in nature, we don't let it happen in our environment. There are exceptions to every rule of course. Ostrich chicks can sometimes bust...
We've taken a 'hard' policy when it comes to hatching. We have very very few successful 'assisted' hatched chicks. I'm talking about when you have to break them out of the shell. This might not be right for everyone, but if they can't make it out of the egg on their own we let them pass.
Ah, convert that thing over to a fan unit. They have conversion kits on eBay that go for only 20 or so, but you will see your hatch rates improve DRAMATICALLY. Mailed eggs are hard depending on the distance they come. But doing it with still air is difficult at best. If you need help finding...
Awesome! Here are pics of the lavendar o crosses that have hatched so far :)
My friends and family shook their heads when we moved to the country from New Orleans almost 3 years ago... When you look at this sunrise... how could you ever NOT want to be here? :D
Incubator: Believe it or not I found that Hatchrite on eBay. The man seriously did not know what he had, didn't care, just wanted that enormous incubator gone. Okey dokie! So I obliged him. 750.00 and some nail biting shipping arrangements later and it was on my doorstep.
Ostrich Eggs for...
Hah thanks! :) They are about 3 - 4.5 pounds coming out of the egg and about the size of an oversize feathered softball :D Yes, these eggs are from our own birds.
It's a big Hatchrite, double stack. It will hold 120 ostrich eggs without a problem, is solid stainless steel and weighs over 750 pounds. I found it brand new in a shipping crate in a warehouse out west last year. Luckiest farm find of my life so far lol :)) Five ostriches have hatched so...
