Thank you... That makes sense. The SOP is on my Christmas list for this year. Until then this helps me to understand. :)

Glad to hear you think she is a female! I'd rather have her for straight egg production. What does "squirrel tail" mean and why is her color "horrible"? Not offended, just want to understand the breed better. Thanks!

So, I believe that I have a 19 week-old cockerel. "He" is not crowing, but I do have an alpha rooster, so perhaps that is why this bird has not vocalized. Could you please look at these pictures for type and color? I would like to breed him, if he seems to be shaping up to the SOP. I will be...

This is the wing of an 18 week old "probable" cockerel. Is this shredding a phase or a fault? I don't see any signs of bugs or mites (although I'm not sure what to look for exactly because this is my first season with chickens). Wow! Look at those feet. Mine are feathered, but not so thickly. It gets so cold up here, that would really help!

An excellent point! These chickens are about 16 weeks old. Here is a picture that I took this morning: I realize that Brahmas develop a bit more slowly, but since this is my first time owning some, I was not sure how slowly. Thanks for your input! Cheers, Lori

Thank you. I believe that you are right. The one on the right's face has gotten a brighter red and a crest is starting a bit, but the one on the left has not undergone these changes.

Hi, just wanted to subscribe. I have two standard light Brahmas and they are georgeous (in a layman's eyes). Interested in doing the local shows and some breeding, so it's nice to read the discussion. I had thought my pair were hens, but now it seems that I may have two cockerels. Cheers, Lori
