1. how long have they already been incubating? (some people say it isn't good to switch from on the side to standing up, but I am not sure why that matters)
2. Are they shipped eggs? (some people always incubate upright, but it is VERY important to incubate upright if...
A scale is super useful. I use mine for weighing letters, and for cooking German recipes (crazy people do everything by weight), and for boyscout stuff, and school stuff.

My best hatch rate so far, I started turning them on day 2, and all of the air cells had been very detached. out of 9 eggs 8 hatched, and the one that didn't hatch was a clear.
Oh, and all were properly positioned and hatched by themselves.

I have just turned very gently, but started at day 2.
My hatch rate has been all over the place, understandable with shipped eggs.

From what I understand, if you don't rotate the eggs enough, then malpositioning is more common.
You CAN rotate the enough if they are standing up in egg cartons, it is just different.
I think that they hatch better when standing up. My only loss due to standing up was when I had quail eggs...
