You are making me worry now-I dont want my Rangers to taste like ca ca!! BWAAA!!!
I THINK they will be ok, cause the starter smells NICE...(DH says it tastes good, I myself haven't sampled it.) Maybe we will ahve to invite you over for a taste test....

I made a point to NOT make friends with these guys-having already gone that unfortunate road with the turkeys, the ducks, the geese...I really CAN'T keep 100 pet meaties! So, I feed em, water em, and DON'T spend too much time watching them lest I start getting attached. I love watching...

You DO realize there is no end to this chicken madness? I have just accepted it...."resistance is futile...."
As for the starter----I honestly don't knwo how it will affect flavor, I have never raised these, or any chickens, before! I feed mine organic starter mixed with organic...

Well, I have not eaten mine yet, so I can't speak from personal experience, but from what I have read-yes, they will have more muscle, yes, the texture will be different than that of "sedentary" birds- I have had plenty of very well exercised free- ranged chicken (just not Rangers) and...
YUM! PC, those look good enough to eat! Mine just started trying to crow too- it is this horrible strangled sound-absolutely hysterical! Gotta tell ya, thanks for the chicken hypnotizing trick! Makes it SO much easier to weigh them...and it is just hysterical to watch...well, for me anyway...
OK, here is my best "guesstimate" so far. I started with 100 rangers, lost a bunch right away, got some replacements a week later,. lost a few more along the way due to accidental deaths, and now have about 90 Rangers. They have been sharing their feed, which is turkey starter, with 12 turkey...
I don't mind the size difference...gives you something for everyone. Not everyone wants a big bird. Have you noticed yours vary more according to color? It seems to me the red and dark red ones are the biggest of mine...but I have some who are abit younger, and I forget who is who...
That is just...wild. I am going to have to hypnotize my chickens now, just for fun....maybe I will start with the ones that never want to go in the barn at night....
Mine are getting 28% turkey starter...and they have been doing alot of ranging since they got out of the barn for the first time...

Seriously? He hypnotized it? Or are you just joking... (I feel stupid either way for asking! But I have never seena chicken willingly do that....) Your birds look great!

Same birds actually...if you do the search in BYC, you will read the whole story. Basically, Freedom Rangers went out of business and sold the breeding stock, but not the name, to JM Hatchery. He sells them as "colored range broilers" They were originally marketed in Europe under the...
I plan on doing the deed Oct 23rd-they will be 11 weeks and a couple of days. There is a big difference in size right now- some 2.5 lbs, others closer to 4.5 lbs- I imagine we will have a nice variety of sizes at processing-plenty of big ones for those who want them (like me!) and some smaller...
This guy looked like the porkiest, so I grabbed him for the scale
He looks much slimmer standing
4 lbs-6 oz I think? So a big slow down-gaining about .5 lb week now, as opposed to a pound. That's ok with me though, they are almost there.
Another tasty looking broiler
This just...
