I think that with that ratio of baby's vs adults you should be fine if you have a big enough coop/run. It all comes down to whether the chicks can get away from anyone who is picking on them (which will happen and that's normal). I have a huge group together and there is such a mass confusion...
I think he secretly likes them but he's to embarrassed to admit it. Think little school boy who has a crush on a girl so he picks on her and makes fun of her non-stop.
I just did that with my ancona. She was a pretty bad broody, and liked to leave the nest for 6-7 hours at a time. As soon as my saxony started hatching I snuck them out and swapped for her eggs. That was 4 days ago and so far she's an awesome mom. Her eggs are now cooking in the incubator.
I have had great luck with doing float tests. I haven't been able to feel them wiggle in my hand, and in my opinion some eggs can't been candled well when they are crammed full of chick. I don't judge by how they float, only if they start be -bopping around the bowl of water. Either way...
My final hatch numbers:
Incubator 13/16,
Broody 0/14 (she gave up about a week in and I didn't notice in time.)
So my total is= 13 hatched out of 30 set.
An hour ago nothing at all from any of my 13 eggs that made it to lockdown. I just went and checked again and all of the sudden I have 7 pips. Day 22. Finally.
Yes, I just tell him he can buy more video games and he's all smiles again. I even told him I wanted to buy a bunch of GFF chicks for $59 a piece and he said he didn't care. Thank god I'm to reasonable to actually do it.
My newly remodeled tile shower has now turned into a chick/duckling condo of sorts. My hubby is not thrilled! He says that he's gonna call that animal hoarding show.
Oh my gosh, I just realized I forgot to post how many eggs I set. Sorry sorry sorry!
16 orpington mixes in incubator,
14 under a broody. 30 eggs total set on Saturday.
I have had mine stacked for over a week and so far they are all fine. There are some major cold spots in there (near the back, bottom row), so I just rotate them really well every time I turn them.
Thats crazy, me too.
What is that? I can't tell if it's a control issue, or a god complex, or what. It's crazy. We NEED our hatch fix. Lol
I saw a Dennys commercial yesterday with bacon and eggs and my first thought was "you fools, what a waste of an egg! I could hatch that!!!!"
There is something about hatching that I think is really addicting. Seriously, once the chick's are all safe and sound it's like OK, boring. More eggs now, MORE EGGS!!!
Wow, I can't compete with that incubator but I want to join in.
I will be setting as many of my own eggs as I can fit in two incubators. Mostly Splash Orp roo X BA hens. Lots of pretty little blue chicks.
Excited to join, and best of luck to everyone.
