How many chicks?
This container will NOT be big enough very long, maybe a week depending on how many you have. You may want to get a big cardboard box; appliance are sturdy & I've used two big boxes combined in a tight pinch. It was recommended to me to keep the MHP away from the back of the...
I agree with you but culling is NOT for cowards, it's practical & realistic. I do try ONLY if it's not serious, culling sometimes the most humane thing to do. It's all part of raising animals, the hardest part, I've done it not that I like to
I know it was't funny but you got to admit, it's...
From my experience, measly 3 different sets of chicks ranging from 10, 9, 38, they'll be spending more time on top rather than under shortly and "done" in a couple more weeks, depending on your weather. They are fun to watch with all their antics....
PS...The 38 were Seramas/Silkies
You sure you had 41 and not 40? The lady I raise hatched chicks for swore she had 40 Serama/Silkie chicks for me to babysit, said she counted as she put them in the carrier. When she got here we counted placing them in my brooder, 39.....We counted again back into the carrier 39but when...
Welded wire works great as junebuggena states. I have the Sunbeam 732-500 with 3 settings, main thing no auto shut off. Agree with Nathan J about not sectioning it off, depending on how many you're getting they'll love the space once they learn their way around. Could start offf with their...
I find at about 2wks they like being on top of the MHP during the day IF anything. No idea what setting you have it set at but as aart suggests, turn the heat down. I start off on Med (day olds) and depending on the time of the year/weather I turn it down to Low during the days when they're...
I've used the MHP 3x, each came with fine tuning & great advise by others
I had mine against the back of the brooder, aart advising to move away from the back so those in the back wouldn't be "stuck" by the crowd (I had 38 at that time), made sense and the space on the sides (MHP & brooder...
Depending on how many you getting, you can us a lid with rocks so they don't drown themselves. Or if there's a feed store go get a temp one with the qt sized jar with base, you may need more than one if you're getting alot of chick.
Good to know I'm not the only one that felt this way (Blooie) and I'm sure others have gone through the same feelings...
By the time those chicks were 2 weeks old I was close to hating them! They weren't adorable little chicks that were going to grow up and provide eggs for my family - they...
The "problem" when first starting with MHP (Sunbeam 732-500) we expect it to be warm or get a temperature reading of what is said to be what the chicks need. Know I did The whole concept is the chicks are under the MHP's warmth like being under a Hen, their backs are up against then hen/pad. I...
3x
I used to use disposable potty pads over the top of my MHP that was in a sack I sewed for it (left over material) but the chicks shredded it & pieces are disappearing I was horrified thinking I killed them & they were going to all die from all that plastic. Stopped using the pad & dug...
Nathan J - junebuggena is right, sounds like it's too warm & space heater not needed. Think they'll be happier under Med, it's not the temp in the box that keeps them warm, it's them snuggling against the MHP, like they would with a Hen.
I just read the specs on the one you ordered, there's an automatic 2hr shut off. You need the one that does NOT shut off, chicks require constant heat. You may want to cancel the order, making sure you get on that does not have the automatic shut off.
The Sunbeam recommended has a choice...
Thanks for clarifying, I was under the impression the MHP had to be under/touching chicks back. You're right about that tape, I learned that the hard way. I made the covering for the MHP a bit larger, then wrap it over the edges with the bungee holding it.
Heating pad needs to be under the frame not top, it has to touch the chicks back, Home Depot sells packs of small bungee cords that I use after I read some others mentioning it. Thinking 4" - 6" may be too high, mine start of with 3" - 3 1/2". Great idea using the rod to support the chicken...
I've used extra hardware cloth (1/4 x 1/4 squares) for the "skeleton", worked for me & chicks! I've also used welded wire (1/2x1, 1x2) cause I had some laying around, worked too. My start up was rough, over thinking the simplicity of "design", have used it 3x and LOVE IT!
Blooie's right, the Micros (37) are 3wks and on top of MHP (15x24), they started hopping up last week & find some like to sleep up there now. In fact I did a BIG BOO BOO last night, forgot to turn the MHP on! Thank goodness I live in Hawaii, I turn it off once it warms up, usually around 9 -...
