Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I had 25 under mine. And I did find I needed the back to be not closed off, but loosely covered. Then open as they grew. I had a slow work schedule at the time too. So was able to monitor them a lot.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Aw, cuties! They look comfy. I had problems with mine getting caught here and there until I put the whole MPH setup inside a pillowcase and clipped it shut so they couldn't get inside it. And strapped the whole thing so the pillowcase wouldn't sag.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

The fluffy side is up on mine as it seems cooler than the smoother side. I coated my whole heat pad with PressNSeal and encased it in a pillowcase. I tried to keep a towel on it to keep it cleaner. But the chicks kept moving the towel or getting wrapped in it, So hopefully the PressNSeal does...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

If they seem content, they are probably fine. But You could possibly lower it down a bit depending on their age. 5-6 inches high is a bit high for chicks younger than 3 weeks old or so. If they are younger, try 3-4 inches.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Mine did this for a few nights. I raised the MHP with a different frame and they used it again. Then, I transitioned them to my garage and they use it a lot with temps in the 30s.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hope you're okay. @duluthralphie sorry about your chicks. I had to wrap my MHP in a pillowcase and clamp it shut because the chicks kept crawling inside and getting stuck.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

"Today I moved the "wild bunch" out to the garage. Temps are supposed to be around 30F tonight. I gave them a bigger pen lined with straw. Set up the MHP cave and they are all in it. Yay! I'm so happy to have them out of the spare bedroom! Now I see what y'all meant about the dust, lol.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

You just have to keep an eye on them at first. If they settle down and get cozy, they won't be crying in distress. If they don't seem to want to be in the cave at all, turn down the temp. They will let you know.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Mine have been doing the same thing, and are the same age as yours. I'm wondering if I should turn mine down too? They hang out on top of the cave a lot during the day. But not at night. Am I doing something wrong? I made it taller for them, but they would still need to crouch a little to get...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Congrats!!! What kind are they? Here's my updated brooder. I found a baby pool, and it's working pretty good. But they are big enough that I'm hoping to get them out to the coop this weekend or early next week if the Arctic temps let up.
