Don't believe everything you read on the internet ;)
Because apparently they don't need it when you are watching them.
You could give that a try
Maybe it is TOO warm inside?
But does it get hot enough for the chicks?? Using the old:
If they won't go in - too hot
If they won't come out - too cold
If they go in and out - JUST RIGHT!
Fabulous build (tell him I said so ;) ) A little fancy but not stupid fancy. Clearly well thought out and constructed.
Why would you want to do that given you've already seen how well MHP works?
True but unless there is a lot of ventilation, the 95°F at brooder bottom level (the bottom of the bathtub, heat lamp controlled with a remote reading thermostat in the case of my initial 12) floods the room pretty darn well even with the shower curtain pulled to try to contain the heat.
It...
That is ambient air temp for chicks raised in an enclosed area with a heat lamp. They DO NOT need that temp. Does a hen heat the air where they and the chicks live? No. What the chicks need is ACCESS to heat when they need it.
I have raised day old shipped chicks with MHP and by a broody hen...
Chicks are normally "fully feathered" by about 4 weeks and shouldn't need supplemental heat after that unless it is pretty cold where they are.
And 12"x12"? Yeah that is not a long term heat source for 12 chicks.
If you can find an XL pad with no auto-off or one that can cancel that feature, a...
I also would not put it in a plastic bag. Not sure what that would do to the pad with heat building up inside. I've done the pillowcase wrap and also have used a piece of canvas sewed to enclose the frames and pad.
Old dish towel on top is fine, I don't bother with the Press-n-seal (actually...
What @aart said!
I would have pulled that thing out at 5 weeks unless they were fully feathered at 4. That said, I've not had "pacifier chicks", those that did MHP until feathered instead of being raised by a hen have gone up on the roosts at about 4 weeks of their own accord. Want to be like...
Yeah, I figure the hen doesn't know about MHPs since she IS the MHP ;)
Me too. Especially after watching hens raise hatchery chicks out in the barn. Around here they wouldn't see 95 ambient until mid July (and we do NOT like that temp!!). The hen will have them out in the run in 50°F at a week...
Possession is 9/10 of the law, Ken's were there first! Thus he needs to take care of his birds and while he's there can also take care of the ones you ordered together.
She will be though I doubt she would see 3 week old chicks as a threat to her kids.
I don't think she will take them as her own but she might let them hang around as part of her flock.
