I did take the heat source away from my chicks. Just left them with the cave structure to huddle and sleep on since that's what they are used to. I found them looking quite cozy though in the big coop today.
Maybe I should put up a lower roost board?
Is it bad to have the heating pad for too long? My chicks have been outside since they were about 2 weeks old. They are 5 weeks old today and fully feathered. The pad has been at 2 for a bit now. But there are some night still predicted to be in the high 20s. They don't sleep under the cave...
My husband brought home 6 fuzzy butts yesterday. They all crawled right in the cave and crashed out. Barely even heard a peep. This morning they are all up and acting like happy lively chicks :)
This is my second year raising this way. I love it and find it much more relaxing now that I have...
It's been a long time since I have posted on this thread. I'm already looking forward to getting a few more chicks this year. I had such a great experience last year with this method. It will be even more fun doing it again with experience under my belt!!
I think my one EE that has always had a redder, but kind of a strange comb is in fact a girl. It has always been the most skiddish of the chicks but it has now started to do the submissive squat instead of run away when I come close.
Thanks. They are all up in the roosts at night now and have been that way for at least a month. I figured I have a bit of time yet. I'll let them have access in a couple weeks I guess
No more raccoon attacks since thankfully. But we have gotten and killed 3 in the live traps we have set up. My chicks are now 14 weeks. I have had the nesting boxes closed off because when the were little they tried to roost in there. Do I wait until they start laying to open them back up? Thanks!
I was just out admiring how handsome my rooster was getting at 13 weeks. We have had a few raccoons spotted around so I've purposely been locking the birds up early. My run has a chicken wire fence but isn't secure. Tonight I went out while it was still light out and found all the girls in the...
My cat goes into the fenced area and hangs out with the chickens. They seem to tolerate the cat most of the time and then they all gang up and chase her out.
Me either! The suspense is killing me. Mine were still all up on the roost this morning. It was funny to watch them try to get up the courage to come down. Only one figured out there was a ramp.
I was very happy to count heads tonight and find all of my 8 week old chicks sleeping up in the roost. Since I moved them to the new coop they have been trying to all sleep piled on the 5 gallon water bucket.
