My last batch started roosting in their pen around 6 weeks of age I'd say, and then for the next two weeks, started bugging the hell out of me to let them roost with the big birds. Finally gave in and it didn't take them long at all. They were locked out of their brooder pen at 8 weeks and there...
That portal idea is also something I'm trying to figure out lol I still feel like, with their size now, that a few of the bigs would still manage to get in. We have plenty of spare wood from our coop builds to use. I'll ponder my options when I go sit with them again tomorrow evening :)
I don't have anything for them to get under, at this point. I thought about dragging an old sheet of plywood into the coop to lean against one wall, but they're getting to be of size that to keep the bigs out, the chicks would have to do some squeezing. My girls seem pretty determined to get...
Oh how I've missed you BYC...
My turken chicks are now 6.5 weeks old and they've been off heat for about a week now, I think? The last couple of nights, they've flat out refused to sleep under the MHP contraption, even when I pretty much doubled the height. I think these little guys really want...
I put my chicks out in the in-coop brooder a week ago. They're 4 weeks old now. The coop mates are 17 weeks and include 4 incredibly randy cockerels that we're hoping to cull soon. (I am SO ready because they are giving my adult ladies hell when I let them out in the evenings to range!)
I want...
What's interesting is the heat plate I have is made my Titan Incubators. They're out of the UK I believe, so that is pretty interesting their position on it.
If I were the creative sort, I'd try to figure out how to fashion something that would work
Now that the in-coop brooder is done, I...
I will use them again straight out of the incubator, but long term with naked necks, I don't see it being a good idea. Not all of them had the burn blisters, but at least 3 of them have them, that I can remember. Might be a couple more but there are so many that they may just be blending, in my...
We may have some pvc leftover. I'll take a gander at it tomorrow when I'm less busy :)
As far as the heat plate and the naked necks - I have a few chicks that look like they have heat blisters on their head/neck in one spot up near the crown of their head. Those heat plates do get pretty warm...
Here are some POOR photos of my setup, but that's all I have lol. Today was BUSY. Anywho.
Word to the wise, naked neck chicks and heat plates don't really mix ;) Now that the crew has finally been moved outside, that should no longer be an issue. I did have the help them "find" their new heat...
I just picked up some of these bungees today :) I'll FINALLY be putting my contraption together tomorrow as it's OVERDUE for the chicks to move out to the in-coop brooder. I'm excited. And nervous. But mostly excited. Thanks for the idea!
I STILL haven't set my contraption up with the pad yet. Things never seem yo follow the timeline in your head. Anywho. I should be sharing some mhp love by this weekend, hopefully. I haven't fully decided on how I'm attaching the pad to the rack since i never think about the bungies in the...
Thanks guys :)
They were out for a bit this morning but seem to have gone back under the plate for a bit. I put a little nutridrench in the water so hopefully that'll help perk them up lol. They're probably looking at all the naked necks and going "***??" as well...My crew is a boisterous...
Have any of you gotten slightly older chicks (about 2 weeks old) that have been under a lamp the whole time before bringing them home? If so, do you remember how long they zonked out for after getting some darkness and warmth?
I picked up 3 chicks this morning. They had a 40 minute ride after...
I agree. Even when I pull chicks out of the incubator who are cheeping their fool heads off in it, once they get under the heat, they'll zonk out for HOURS. It's beautiful, really.
This is why I don't say anything yet lol. I know that preachy message will come across and I'm not mentally prepared to word things so it DOESN'T sound like that
I have a mini vent, which I'm sure many of you will understand. I didn't realize that so many lamp-raised chicks just pass out on the fly until it was brought up here. I started with the heat plate brooder so it was a thought in the back of my head that my chicks never did that. It just didn't...
You're off the hook. I don't expect anyone to remember ;)
It's a great day, whenever it comes around
I've seen it mentioned in a lot more places recently, about the MHP, so it's picking up some traction. Its a good thing, for sure!
So tall for two reasons, the main one being that my scrap wood pieces worked out that way  The second being that it can double as a roost for them as they start getting more adventurous. It'll make the cardboard topper a mess, but hey, it's version 1!
