By November, he'll be a beautiful bird. He might be a Blue melanistic?...still too early to tell.
He certainly isn't a 'normal' looking melanistic....he doesn't have white primaries like most do at that age.
Keep the updates coming!
The cockbirds are easier on the eye than the hens...a little more color to them but like I said before, they were just too 'dull' for my eyes. One of the reasons I raise pheasants is for the variety of colors....black melanistics just don't have the color that even the green or blue exhibit.
Raise enough of them....eventually you'll get a 'hisser'! ;) At that young of age, it's just a game for them but sometimes it carries over into adulthood. Keep an eye on them if your brooding several together, though, they can be aggressive towards their brooder mates.
That is in no way characteristic of a melanistic pheasant, plumage coloration wise. It might resemble a pied pattern when mature? It certainly is a Black melanistic and not the green or blue color variations.
I got rid of my black melanistics....just too hum-drum....oh, they have a little color...
It is a male. It has an unusually high percentage of white feather color pattern. How it will feather out is anyone's guess....most likely it will look similar to this one and have yellow/orange-ish eyes as an adult. ETA - you'll know what it will look like as and adult by October.
