If you like him that's all that matters. I don't know anything about pheasants but, if show /breeding is what you would like to pursue Sean's comments should be taken into consideration.

Great information. Kind of hoping he stays mottled/pied. And and far as black melanistics, that's alright with me - I purchased them for their dark plumage. That is in no way characteristic of a melanistic pheasant, plumage coloration wise. It might resemble a pied pattern when mature? It certainly is a Black melanistic and not the green or blue color variations.
I got rid of my black melanistics....just too hum-drum....oh, they have a little color in their plumage, mainly purple, if the sunlight hits them 'just right' but other than that, just a dull black color.
Thank you, DD!If you like him that's all that matters. I don't know anything about pheasants but, if show /breeding is what you would like to pursue Sean's comments should be taken into consideration.
They could be....just have to wait until they mature in the fall to find out...unless you saw the breeding stock?Great information. Kind of hoping he stays mottled/pied. And and far as black melanistics, that's alright with me - I purchased them for their dark plumage.
Turns out, I managed to get my hands on 10 more chicks this morning....there was a larger variety of colorations, and most of my little melanistics are chocolate mottled this time. Could these be the blue or green subset you speak of?

Thank you, DD!He's a beautiful pheasant. I'm certainly not taking Sean's comments lightly, as it seems he knows more than anybody around. Very admirable.
Good to know on both accounts. I didn't have access to the breeding flock. They could be....just have to wait until they mature in the fall to find out...unless you saw the breeding stock?
BTW, the one in the pic is female.
Long time no talk, Banty!Alex! Good to see you around. Beautiful acquisitions.
Though not as "flashy" as the traditional pheasant, there's still something subtly nice about this color scheme. Can't wait to see how my newest feather out. Most are much lighter and show a lot of pattern as opposed to the first black melanistics.Found some pics of my Black melanistic hen(s) I had.... you can see what I ment about the light hitting them just right!

Aw snap, my plans have been foiled.Long time no talk, Banty!Thank you. I'd always wanted to venture into the gamebird world, and these little guys haven't disappointed. You should try pheasants....but get your own, not mine.
After years of foiling birdnapping attempts, I'm willing to call a truce.....you may have a couple pheasants, but only if in return I'm allowed a couple of those quail disclosed in your signature.Aw snap, my plans have been foiled.![]()
Deal! I'll even give you a pretty silver one with a white bib. After years of foiling birdnapping attempts, I'm willing to call a truce.....you may have a couple pheasants, but only if in return I'm allowed a couple of those quail disclosed in your signature.![]()
