Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Welcome to BYC. Where, in general, are you located? Climate matters. OverEZ coops, while better built than most of their competition, are notoriously under-ventilated -- which can cause moisture problems. If you haven't made modifications already, you'll probably want to add additional vents...

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Dry chickens are healthy chickens. Frequent wet cleaning isn't good for either the wood or the birds.

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I do Deep Litter in my run, adding more dry organic material at the first hint of any odor, but getting a balanced, actively-composting system going inside a building is a far, far more difficult task. I am blessed with very well-drained soil, which helps tremendously. Alas, I have largely...

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

My Deep Bedding is completely odor-free. It's an absolutely bone-dry system, dry enough that it can't support the growth of pathogens. The amount of litter used dries out the poop almost instantly and the ventilation prevents any possible build up of ammonia or moisture. There is no odor at...

Because they poop while they sleep and the eggs get covered in poop. The only time I ever have to clean my nest boxes is when an egg gets broken. :)

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Me neither. "Only" 5, 10, or 15 minutes a day is 2.5, 5, or 7.5 hours a month. I actually timed myself when writing my deep bedding article and found that it takes 5-15 minutes to add a new layer of bedding every 2 weeks (depending on if I'm opening the bag of shavings or raking up pine straw...

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Sounds like an excellent reason to set up a system that only needs to be cleaned infrequently at a time when good weather can be expected. :D

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Every 6-12 weeks currently -- depending on weather and other factors (article here). The new Open Air coop may need it less often because I may be able to use Deep Litter instead of Deep Bedding.
