Doing well here. I kicked the rest of the flock out of the coop for the day so she’d have some peace, but they’re all getting along now that they’re back inside for the night.
Came home to 5 fully hatched, fluffy chicks. Day 21 starts at 3 pm tomorrow. Go figure! I almost didn’t go check the coop since I got in so late, but I’m glad I did, because two had fallen out of the nest box. I moved all the other chicks and mom down to the floor of the coop, and she settled...
Candled my broody’s eggs this morning, day 18. I saw movement in all 5! Out of 6 shipped eggs, she had 1 clear and 5 alive at “lockdown”. Pretty darn good. I’ll be out of town tomorrow through late Wednesday night, and the eggs are due to hatch Thursday afternoon/evening. Hopefully she doesn’t...
Day 14 today for my broody hatch. I candled this morning, and 4/5 look great. The Lavender Orpington egg is a bit too dark for me to see exactly what’s going on, so I left it with her, too. One more week to go…I’ll candle again Sunday morning for the last time. She’s been excellent so far.
My first-time broody is still doing great, almost halfway through her incubation at day 10. I candled this morning and saw movement in 3 of her 5 eggs. I still have questions about the Lavender Orpington and Black Australorp eggs; they have very dark shells. I’ll check again on Thursday morning...
I have a very large wild turkey flock (~15 birds) on my property. For the last month or so, one of the hens has been hanging out close to the house, even inside my fenced backyard with my chicken flock on occasion. This morning, I looked out the window and saw her inside the yard again, this...
Day 7 for my eggs. I candled this morning and tossed the BO egg, which was an obvious clear and very porous. I’m still not really sure about a couple of the others, but I’m giving them a few more days. It’s difficult to candle in my coop due to a security light in my backyard.
Today is day 4 for my broody Delaware and her assorted hatching eggs from Meyer. I just candled them, and 4/6 look very good with 2/6 questionable. Not bad for shipped eggs, but I’ll candle again Thursday morning before discarding any just to be sure. The hen is sitting tight and doing a great...
Okay, assuming the list I found online was accurate/up-to-date, it looks like I have, starting at the top left and moving clockwise:
Black Australorp
Lavender Orpington
Partridge Cochin
Light Brown Leghorn
Buff Orpington
Cream Legbar
Pretty excited about that LO - I really hope it's a lavender...
The eggs I ordered for my broody Delaware just arrived. I ordered the cheapest, generic “assorted” eggs from Meyer, so I have no idea what they are. Anyone know how to decode the labels? They shipped Tuesday and arrived this morning, and I was VERY impressed with the packaging. They all look...
I thought I was finished hatching for the year. My March & April babies are all integrated into the flock (have been for a few weeks now) and enjoying their new found freedom. And then...my Delaware hen decided to go broody this week. So I ordered her half a dozen hatching eggs, which should...
