Also, (@the old rooster),
should I get two for my coop size?
I don't know the dimensions, but it comfortable houses 40+ chickens.
It's like a good-sized shed.
few more questions:
How would I set up the timer to turn on at 4am and turn off at 4pm or 5pm?
Do I need an outlet? Because, we...
@Chickn Keaper
I have changed there feeding amounts to almost double (for the flock pellet). I sometimes buy different percents of protein for the pellets, but whatever they have available, I get (the highest protein I can find).
Thanks for your help.
Glad to hear I'm not alone (:
Wishing you abundant egg production as well :fl
My surplus of roosters is for a reason. We have plenty of space for all of them, and we need a few more (some bantams, some standards) because we sell hatching eggs and we need to ensure fertility so that people...
I'll try supplemental light for the coming winter, and will use it all year round.
Thanks for the advice @the old rooster
Do you have a link to what light you are using?
It's pretty important, but to an extent. I am not able to supply them with constant food all day - they would go through a whole 50 pound bag in a day or two.
I have changed there feeding times and amounts.
However, I am not able to supply them with food available for the entire day.
They get 2 bowls of pellet in the morning, the bucket of food scraps in the morning, a small handful of mixed grains (as a snack) during the day, and another 1 bowl of...
I had experimented by keeping them in the coop + run all day and found the same amount of eggs, whether they're free ranging, or not. So that doesn't seem to be the problem.
There are no rodents or animals or bugs in any nests. We check our nest boxes (we have 8) every day for any poop...
and @Weeg, it didn't sound rude at all (: actually very helpful and informative.
Thank you! I will change their diet.
Thanks so much to everyone who helped.
And to elaborate off @ChickenCanoe 's comment:
I am aware that our breeds are not the best. We weren't really aiming for ONLY...
So first, @ChickenCanoe, @Mrs. K, @Weeg, @JacinLarkwell, and everyone else, thanks for your long and informative responses.
@ChickenCanoe, just wanted to mention that I'm no expert. I estimated 15%, however, it could very likely be much more. Maybe 20-30, and I know that's not enough either. I...
Ok thank you.
And again, I don't think the diet plays a big role in the egg production drop we just had because we were feeding the same thing over and over all year. So what else could it be?
