Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Rex: Sorry I JUST saw this-CONGRATS!!!!! How are the chicks doing? Have you let them out of the cage at all? My first few days of letting the chicks out in the coop was stressful but everyone is now happily getting along just fine. Post some pics if you have them?

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

I am experiencing something new this time around: Multiple hens with chicks. When I let the hen/chicks out-the hens are fighting! Either mom with mom, broody fighting a mom, or just random hen fighting the moms! Not seeming to go after the chicks at all-just hen fights! UGH!

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

It has worked out well for me, allowed chicks to experience the flock action, and I can easily monitor when I let them out. Plus they are pretty inexpensive.

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

gtammassmitty: I am right there with you! My next challenge is: I have 14 lil chicks in 3 caged/brooders with their mommas. As soon as I start integrating them into the flock/letting them out to free range, I am going to have issues!!! A) I have a GL Wyandotte whos mission is to pick on the...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Ugh! So with 6 broody hens in the coop and 5 that I gave eggs to my experience: I tried a separate brooder pen, rabbit cages, cat carriers, etc. The best set up I currently have is the wire rabbit cages (20-30 at fleet farm for 3 ft by 3 ft) and I started with a small cat carrier inside until...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

I always worry about the same thing....(in fact have been known to take them off once a day up to Day 18 shhhhh) but as so many others more wise than I, have stated: Chickens have survived this long without our interference. What I have done is separate the hens and give them their own...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

gammasmitty: I also have a rooster however, with 23 hens to cover not sure that all of mine are fertile. Plus, since I love all the varieties, I have over a dozen breeds and would end up with some strange looking chicks thats for sure! I also, have preferred to mostly buy sexed hens but I really...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Getting ready to put some shipped eggs under some broody hens again this coming Sat. I am so excited: Lavender and Salmon Faverolles!. This time I may leave them in with the flock as the brooder pen has a damp floor with all the rain-cement walls seep moisture. I currently have 7 broody hens and...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

I may have a lavender roo available. "Peekachu" hes a complete sweetheart but my other roo won't let him do much at all-he ends up staying inside on a roost or being chased most of the day. rehri: I would think it would be fine....when you consider LF hens will sit on up to 30 eggs at once I...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Gramma: My understanding is, the hen will usually stay on the nest for the first 2-3 days (The chicks are still absorbing the yolk and do not need to eat during this time) allowing any other eggs to hacth. So it would depend on how long the other eggs have been under her.

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Hello! Update to my posting from a year ago: I put eggs under my broody hens and seperated them into a priavte area-they all hatched and the two moms shared parenting..chicks would go back and forth in the brooder area between the two moms The "babies" are now adults and beautiful hens/roos

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Ridgerunner: Thanks again for all the great advice. I completely understand that things go wrong-just beleive the more prepared I am-the more I know what to look for! And I agree with putting at least 2 eggs under each broody-I feel so bad for them each day when I go out and take their eggs. I...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Awesome advice-thank you for your insights!!! I have also recently heard about the sharpies possibly being toxic-but you have had no problems? So if I have 2 broody hens, would you recommend only letting one hatch at a time? Or less problems with giving each and egg or two? The nest boxes are...
