Long time no visit BYC! Hello and Merry Christmas to my peeps Well, EIGHT months down the road, "Runt Feathers" (still a Small hen!) laid an egg. Here she is full-grown in the Fall sun, and with her first little egg:

Quote: go Small Chick!!! But that's super suspicious........lol I know, right?! It's been bothering me for SO long. I thought someone may have stolen it, but no one ever goes in "the thicket". Either this is a very strange proposal from my BF (who gave me the ring in the first place)...

Small chick recovered from runny eye, first egg today :)

Now THIS is weird. I lost a ring in the yard last summer, out under the pepper trees. I set it (I thought) in the crotch of a branch while we were clearing some of the overgrowth. Forgot about it until the next day, and it was nowhere to be seen. Searched and searched, eventually and sadly...

Quote: Yeah- it goes around a lot when there are toddlers involved- and I have teens that babysit as do their friends. That's how I knew you needed the Ciprofloxacin! I keep a bottle on hand, but there are other drops that can be used. Vetericyn has a gel, too, at the feed store, but it's got...

No way! Seriously??? Is it working? Ironically, my folks adopted a kitten from the Humane Society that had an eye thing going on too... gave her the cipro drops.

Thanks again, you two! She's still slightly smaller than her sister, but nearly indistinguishable now. Ironically, I think the leghorn roo has a bit of a crush on her! The neighbor thinks they're cute and wonders if they'll "make babies". Cute, sure, but no crowing yet so maybe she'll change...

She's still got a sweet-tooth at 4 months. Glad I kept her. Here she is! (Please pardon the Orpy butt.)

Quote: That is such a great picture, you would never know anything was wrong with her. And the roo too great work. I am mama duck to a lone duckling that mama doesn't want. She is 5 days old this morning and we are in love, because of her rough start my grandkids have named her Hope. All the...

Quote: How cute!!! Again, congratulations!! I know that she will pay you back with plenty of eggs in the near future.......... That would be great! She's still skittish, but comes around for cherries-- her favorite. Sugar while they're young!

Quote: Yes, it's the somewhat thicker (and cheaper!) kind for drywall. In the run I have ply up about 16", and the wire above and below (buried) another 16". Also over the top. I do have chain-link around the top half and may cover that with smaller gauge as well. I have doubled-over the...

Thank you, and sorry for the late reply. Here she is today. Outside with the rest, and munching her first pineapple. Across from her is the leghorn roo, who has miraculously recovered as well. How are your chicks doing these days?

Here she is, queen of the food court! I'm going to wait another week or so before letting her outside.

Quote: We buried the fence about 2 feet down. Yes, the chickens were out at the time. It was at night, and we didn't have the coop done at the time, so we put some of the little chickens in a really nice and big dog crate, and the others in two bulky, sturdy boxes. The coyotes actually pried...

Wow, so sorry to hear. I really do dislike coyotes. How far down did you bury the new fencing? Because we're doing that this weekend. The chickens are closed in their coop until we secure the run. Were yours out in their run at the time?

Thanks, especially for the advice-- kind of why I snuck in the photos. I'm not letting them out into the run until we've put ply and hardware cloth around the perimeter. We're burying several inches as well because of gophers. I went out in the middle of the night to check on them (I was...

Quote: Thank you!! Good days and bad for him. It may be best if he can't fend for himself, be mobile, etc. but we will monitor him and see what (if anything) we can do. Sometimes the ones who recover are stronger. In regard to CRD, I understand why culling is best for all. Since I'm not...

I've read that it can also be contracted through food sources, especially maize crops. He had corn the night before. Might be botulism as well. He's been in a different box than the others for a few weeks, and none of them have symptoms. The first signs of something amiss were when he was...

Quote: I'm learning this. My mom used to tell tales of her grandmother going out to "fetch dinner" on the farm (chop, chop). I grew up just eating chicken from the store. Became vegetarian "just because" at twelve, then started eating meat again at 25. After seeing how factories add muscle...
