Same here....just flock breeding for now and trying to use a broody when I can. These two Del hens just might earn a permanent spot in the flock if they keep going broody each year. The best one of the two is brooding now, the other one was easy to break and was not serious about brooding but...
Whatever you are doing, keep doing it! It's producing some mighty stocky chicks...even your mutts are sturdy and huge! Can you show the male and female that produced that chick in the bottom pic? I'd sure love to see them and look at their set.
It sure is! She does good work, doesn't she? These are lovely birds and very characteristic of the breed....calm, regal, clean, excellent feather quality, foraging skills, hardiness, weights and laying.
That's Jake's woobie...he carries it around from place to place, chews on it now and again, etc. He devours two or three deer hides a year, plus all the bones, skulls, teeth and all.
I wondered if anyone would catch that and comment. When I took the pic I was clearly not looking at the setting because I was walking by with the camera and she was posing so pretty. That place is the dog's lounging area, hence the deer hide and bones, on the porch area of our old log...
X2 !!! Praying for you, dear Kathy, for care and comfort and quick recovery and healing.
Here's a few pics of the wonderful hens you sent me.....such lovely birds. I love them!
High in protein and digestibility for chickens and it attracts bees to our garden, so it's a win/win. We'll be overseeding/frost seeding more of the WDC this season also....we didn't do that meadow this past year and I could see the native grasses taking the clover over a good bit so I'll be...
They LOVE the woods! That's where all the bugs are. Most of their foraging took place on the rim of the woods and meadow, in the leaf litter there. And it's shady there so they get multiple benefits from foraging in the wood line.
Yep...I have pics and video of them foraging their fool heads off. It was one of those vids that inspired Aoxa to do the same, with great results. There is a lot of propaganda out there against the CX bird due to people following the hatchery guidelines for feeding and care of these meat...
CX aren't heart breaking...they are the most vigorous foragers I've had of any breed I've ever owned. And that's saying a lot. I've never lost one for health reasons...they are healthy, tough and hardy if raised properly.
Nope! That would WAY too hot..... But the nest is agoin'....temps at 99.0-99.5 now and all the eggs look so sweet in their feathers. I know all the experienced incubators are out there laughing their heads off at my simulated nest hatch, but it just might surprise a lot of folks. Could be...
Got a pic of my Del eggs but it came out a little pastel in coloring...don't know quite why as my camera has never done that before. Must have been the lighting. I'll be hatching out some of these if all goes well in my incubation I started today.
Oh...BTW...I started that hatch and...

Close....but no banana. Still working out the fine details of the incubator and such...it's a process. Hope to have it ready by tomorrow or the next day but may run into snags...remains to be seen.
I'll take a pic of mine today....I'm very pleased with their size, shape and uniformity and now with the color variation. I'm going to incubate some of them this weekend for a practice hatch on my DIY incubator.
