I wanna find some babies that will grow up with me, avoiding the pullets who are accustomed to others. It's like birthing your own babies and rearing them. I don't know if any of the local breeders sex their chicks, but I can't have any roosters within city limits.
I definitely want some...
I think there are some Delaware breeders out here, but they may not subscribe to this thread. I'm in no hurry, but probably wait a few more weeks so see who may chime in. Not interested in show quality, just want a simple, peaceful backyard flock while enjoying my long deserved retirement. --BB
Everything else will be screened in, including the roof, like an aviary. No wild birds or critters can get in. The 'observatory' will be the only open area, cut off from the rest of the run. --BB
The observation deck will be open, but the rest of the run will be completely screened in. I will be "walled out" and they'll have no access to it. --BB
The park bench will be replaced with a nice cushioned glider (maybe include a huge rectangular shade for me), and I think I'm gonna add a tiny drop-down door right behind that spool of wire to throw in some treats without having to enter the run. The 6x6 or 7x7 coop is constantly being...
Thanks so much, this thing is entirely from scratch. I tend to DRAW A LOT, and just sat down thinking about some 2x6 and 4x4 boards and started at the center and worked my way out like the spokes of a wheel. No method to my madness and it is very sturdy. I love the planning stages, but hate...
I'm retiring at the end of February and wanted to start off with six Dels but changed my mind to maybe 4 Dels, 4 Black Australorps and either 4 sex-links of some type or Dominiques. A dozen may be a bit much for a single person, but believe I have the space and some co-workers who want some...
I apologize for my bad choice of words regarding poor stock. It was a wrongful generalization out of ignorance. I'm not trying to bash the hatcheries, after all, they do serve a purpose for people who only want meat, eggs and/or pets and have no interest in breeding to the Standard Of...
Thanks so much. I have no interest in breeding and/or showing. I just want some pets for eggs and companionship. I don't like the thought that some of these breeds "burn out" in about 18 months. It would be nice to have some layers way beyond that point, and not have to have them "processed"...
Why is "hatchery stock" so poor? They have got to get them eggs from somewhere. Are they getting them from sloppy breeders or doing their own thing with hens and fertilized eggs? I think they should be held accountable for passing off breeds as "pure" specimens. --BB

Wow, it took a few weeks, but I managed to get through all 1,268 pages of this thread, and what an education! I wanted to learn as much as possible about the Dels because our large ACE Hardware store started selling chicks about six months ago. They only get a small batch of 25 sexed chicks...
