And finally, the first two moms began laying again about two weeks ago. I tried separating them from the babies a week before, and it was a no-go. I’m going to try again soon. Probably this week. I want them back in the SPR coop. Hopefully I’ll get in the mood to process the Easter hatch...
Next entry!
The first two moms were given 8 chicks that Duckling picked out. Two reds, two LH, two grey, two black (1 got crushed). I said six. The woman didn’t stop her, and I wasn’t paying attention to them. I heard, “and one of thooose…” and asked how many were in the boxes already. :gig That...
Ooooooookay. I’m at 20 chickens, and it should be double that. Thank God my broodies share! It is a little confusing that the younger girls’ eggs aren’t hatching. If I thought hard enough, and looked for my incubator notes*, I would remember if any even had developed.
I currently have four moms...

:woot :wee
It is definite now that the holdout is laying. She has been for three weeks, but with three others going broody, plus the possibility that other pullets could have been having a small egg day, I wasn’t sure. Hatch day is today/tomorrow/whenever they want.
I must be honest. I didn’t get to see the friendly Muscovy people speak of. I can definitely tell you that in the spring, drakes are nasty. My Pekin nipped the backs of my legs when he was in a romantic mood. I couldn’t trust him from March to May.
Yes, I want poults for Thanksgiving.
I know the difference immediately, but they deny it. I’m especially confused about how it was a common thing 5 years ago. Across the country, BYC members were complaining about it. There’s at least one thread about it.
We agree we miss ducks. I want Call, but Pekin (they are usually actually Muscovy mismarked) is more common around here. The chicks would be EE sold as Ameraucana. We also like Welsummer, and my one is in her third year. More Welsummer is very likely. The number? :D I can’t say. 6-9 probably.
Two broodies in a cage... Instead of incubating eggs, I’m going to buy chicks/poults/ducklings. It was the original plan, but I wasn’t sure. My eggs only cost the incubator electricity.
<sigh> I still have a holdout, and the broody is the scatter brained one from last year. She will keep the other broodies company, and take care of a few chicks, but she isn’t reliable for hatching them. She had no interest in the chicks I brought her.
Now about the one pullet that hasn’t laid...
