I’m born and raised in the Inland empire! I just moved from the Temecula valley area to the San Bernardino mountains. Moved up here because the valley areas are getting very overcrowded and expensive, you couldn’t get the size of property we have down there without paying well over a million.

Happy spring everyone! I've been a bit silent here since I haven't done too much to the run since it's been very cold this winter. This has been the coldest winter here in over 50 years! Now that the weather is finally warming up i'm planning for some more plants that I want to add to my run...

I do put large rocks around the base of my plants. If I just planted something and it’s trying to establish, I put a wire cage around it for a couple of months until it has a good amount of new growth.

Took the cage off of the butterfly bush (buddelia) and it has exploded with new growth! It has doubled in size since I planted it! Bonus is the chickens don’t like to eat it, just lay by it.

Sounds awesome! I bet they love the shrubs and trees! The chickens love hanging around the rosemary! Mine hate rosemary so they don't eat it, they just prefer to sit around it and under it!

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. My chickens are super picky so they don't tend to eat the plants I add and only pick at them every once in a while. Except the berry plant leaves, which is why they're along the wall with a fence! I know for a fact that they'll eat the blueberry bush leaves...

Theres some lists online of the more well known toxic plants for chickens. Native plants aren't usually listed so I do some research on them to see if they are classified as toxic to other animals. For example California poppy and Mountain Lupine are both classified as toxic so I do not add them...

Love it! It does look like a pretty meadow in there! What a great space you have as well, I wish I could build a run that large but with material prices right now it would cost me more than 3 grand to do that. 😬
