Some new additions to the run… I’m slowly starting to fill out the extended section of the run! Here’s some things I added so far… I added some more of these sage brush to the run since they do so well. I lined all of the edges of the run area with these plants…. That sad looking plant...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

I’m born and raised in the Inland empire! I just moved from the Temecula valley area to the San Bernardino mountains. Moved up here because the valley areas are getting very overcrowded and expensive, you couldn’t get the size of property we have down there without paying well over a million.

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Awesome assortment of plants! Something I definitely miss about living in the valley was the ability to grow citrus, olive trees, lemongrass, and the other warm climate plants/trees. Olive trees are so pretty 🥲 We’re now zone 7-8, just a few thousand feet higher than the valley so the nights...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Thank you! Very excited for this growing season, planning to add lots more plants especially since I have the run extension done... Everything looks so sad and bare but all of this rain we had this past winter and early spring so far is probably going to be very good for them! Just hoping some...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Happy spring everyone! I've been a bit silent here since I haven't done too much to the run since it's been very cold this winter. This has been the coldest winter here in over 50 years! Now that the weather is finally warming up i'm planning for some more plants that I want to add to my run...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

I do put large rocks around the base of my plants. If I just planted something and it’s trying to establish, I put a wire cage around it for a couple of months until it has a good amount of new growth.

Love it! It looks awesome and I’m sure the chickens really enjoy those trees! An awesome place to spend the summer too, lots of natural shade for them!

Took the cage off of the butterfly bush (buddelia) and it has exploded with new growth! It has doubled in size since I planted it! Bonus is the chickens don’t like to eat it, just lay by it.

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Added 2 new plants in the chicken run! Another blueberry and a Mexican bush sage. I don’t even have to cage the Mexican bush sage because the chickens took one tiny bite of it and spit it out lol. I definitely recommend plants in the sage family. They’re nice because theres some that are good...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

That sounds awesome! I bet they love all those fresh greens! I made sure to grow lots of extra ones in my garden for them as well haha! I want to try and grow some grapevines up the run to provide some shade, except I want to grow it from the inside because the squirrels and wild birds are...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

It's funny how different flocks have different tastes! Mine take one peck at the butterfly bush, then proceed to spit the piece out and wipe their beak and walk away. Ever since I planted a bunch of those sagebrushes under the coop, they've been obsessed with that area. They take naps, preen...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Sounds awesome! I bet they love the shrubs and trees! The chickens love hanging around the rosemary! Mine hate rosemary so they don't eat it, they just prefer to sit around it and under it!

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. My chickens are super picky so they don't tend to eat the plants I add and only pick at them every once in a while. Except the berry plant leaves, which is why they're along the wall with a fence! I know for a fact that they'll eat the blueberry bush leaves...

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Theres some lists online of the more well known toxic plants for chickens. Native plants aren't usually listed so I do some research on them to see if they are classified as toxic to other animals. For example California poppy and Mountain Lupine are both classified as toxic so I do not add them...

Haha thank you very much!! I definitely try and give them lots of entertainment and beauty in the run since that's pretty much their whole world! I can't wait to expand it and add some more plants!

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

You're welcome! Your chickens will absolutely love some plants in their run! I can't wait until mine get larger so they can provide lots of natural shade. In my old run my chickens spent all summer under a huge rosemary bush and peach tree.

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Some were just planted and others have been there for 4 months or so, planted right as I moved in the new house. In my old run at my old house I had plants that started out tiny and got huge with chickens over 2 years!

Plants In The Chicken Run! A Mini Forest For Chickens!

Love it! It does look like a pretty meadow in there! What a great space you have as well, I wish I could build a run that large but with material prices right now it would cost me more than 3 grand to do that. 😬
