I think this will be the final update, we did end up having to put down the one with the neurological thing happening, but the other two are alive, eating drinking and pooping just fine. Looks like their umbilical holes are healed, so just watching for infection at this point, which I think...
Final chick hatched out, has some kind of neurological thing going on. Legs straight out, toes curled, can't hold his head up, can't sit up straight, screaming and spinning in the incubator. Giving it a little time, but I am afraid I will have to put this chick down. Worst hatch ever.
Update: The two still look very puny, especially compared to the two that had no issues. The second one is still dealing with pasty butt, checked temps and everything in the brooder is perfect. I saw them both drink water, so that's good, but I forgot to get some SavAChick while I was out, and...
Update: The first one, to worst of the two, looks pretty good, moving around great, clean vent, the hole is still open some, nothing hanging out, and dry. The second one who I thought was going to do better actually looks like it might have some problems. The hole is closed for the most part...
This is a rare breed mix. We had a power outage, and an unusual drop in humidity during this incubation, so I wouldn't be surprised if the research shows that these are some contributing factors.
Just had another hatch the same way, at least this one is not near as bad as the first. Something must have happened during incubation. Time for research.
Update: chick still being crazy all over the incubator. Intestines are on the inside enough for me to feel comfortable leaving it unwrapped. The umbilical hole looks bruised, but dry and closing slowly. About 1 cm long and about 2 mm wide.
Since my last update: the chick was in a moist towel in a cup. It wiggled it's way out and I realized what was left of the yolk sac detached from the chick, and most of its intestines had returned to the inside of the chick. I did attempt to return the little bit that was left outside back to...
Wrapped it in a warm damp paper towel, put it in a clean cup, looks like the intestines have gone back in. It's not trying to run around for now, so maybe it will sort it out.
Since I'm here, it's never helpful to try to assign blame when someone is in the middle of an emergency. Maybe just...
I'm sure, but no one has touched this incubator since they stated hatching. I've been hovering over it watching them since last night, and I watched this crazy chick pop out myself and then all hell broke loose.
So what do I do? Leave it in the cup and hope it turns out? Or is it not going to...
It's in a cup, I removed the rest of the shell so it would stop kicking at it, I had to grab him to keep him from dragging that mess all over the incubator. It was trying it's damnedest to run right out of the shell.
