Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

I don' think the chickens care when I get cold coming out to take care of them in the negative temps. On Ellie's point, I always worry about folks who are trying to winter birds in northern tier states in unaltered chicken tractors. Now I use them myself in summer quite happily, but winter...

Yes, the proper thing is to know your conditions, your birds and your goals, and check the animals regularly for problems of any kind. If you need perfect combs and wattles for shows, your goal is different from the backyard flock and your actions may therefore be different. We are going to...

Quote: They make a higher wattage version for larger gallon aquariums. I'd go with that option for a 5 gal. bucket. I believe the 25 watt version is the one you're looking for. Heading for the store this weekend for these supplies. If I can reduce the humidity, I can reduce the supplemental...

I will have to look up training for nipple waterers. I have often thought about it as the big wattled birds drag them through the water when they drink from traditional bowls, making them more susceptible to frostbite. Thank you for the tip!

Quote: I have same problem. I do believe it is from the heated waterers. If chickens cannot see, they do not move. So if your coop is dark, they will not go to the waterer to drink over night. It could be removed. However, they will be thirsty in the morning. You will need to get water...

Quote: Your concerns are valid and I appreciate the reminder. My lamps are each secured to three separate points (paranoia) and are postioned away from where birds normally fly. I dusted them last night (a lot of dust, do not underestimate the amount of dust chickens give off). I agree this...

Only -17F this morning. Buckeye girl seems fine, likes her leftover quiche. I have to confess I added some heat lamps to keep the coop at least in the 20's. The Jaerhon Rooster is going to lose points from his comb anyway. I guess this just means I have to stick to breeds with pea combs...

-25F here this morning, that's temp not wind chill. 25F at roost level in the 16X20 insulated coop-room in the pole shed. It felt colder to me, but that is the thermometer reading. Heated Dog Dishes are thawed but all non-heated dishes are frozen almost solid. some birds are shaking their...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

My issue is humidity. The 16 X 20 insulated coop room is in a much larger pole shed and is divided into several pens for different groups. There are 30-40 well-feathered adult standard size birds in this coop room. I am still seeing frost on the inside of windows. Temps in the coop room...

Quote: Blasphemy!!! Hey, this is how I get my husband to stomach my chicken related expenses. "The electric mesh fence can go around the gardens to protect the sweet corn from racoons when we do not have chickens...." "The Hoop House shelters can be covered with plactic and used for green...

On the low-heat pet beds in the nest boxes to keep eggs from freezing. Note these are VERY low heat. Basically they warm the portion of the pet that is actually in contact with the mat and do no space heating at all. So in the boxes where these were not covered with bedding, the eggs...

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain : Quote: I've personally not had much of a problem with frozen eggs, but I probably have a lot more birds than the average person. The girls are usually lined up to get into the nest as soon as it's vacated! I would think that a lamp on the nest would help, but perhaps...

Quote: If you show chickens, that will be a disqualification. So I imagine those who have birds they plan to show are forgiven if they are a little more concious about the temps experienced by their potential show birds. We kept our birds in hoop houses on pasture right up until the wind...
