I'm not meaning walking on it, it'd be something for them to peck at. I sometimes give my hens tiny snowmen just for them to peck at for entertainment.

Maybe you can give them a snowman if you have enough snow to make them one. My chickens love eating snow.

Do you go to a food bank? Sometimes they give out rice that most people don't like. I wouldn't suggest giving them too much of that, but they'd love to dig around it. Also, throw in some dried beans. They might not eat them, but it'd be entertainment.

I'd keep what you are doing. I think that you shouldn't free-range your chickens when you're not there, if there's a concern of predators. If you're there and a predator comes, you can protect your flock. If you're not there when a predator comes, who will protect your flock?
