We live in Bristol too and there is a family of foxes right across the road from us. They were spending their early evening hours staring at my shotty field fencing so it all got replaced this spring. Next phase will be to finish fencing the outside of the horse pasture as well so that they can...

Not sure where you are located but you may want to check into Misty Knoll in New Haven. They are the big bird processors in our area and someone had told me that they will actually process birds start to finish for people for a price. Not sure what that is but it's worth checking out I think...

I am in Bristol so just a skip and jump away from you. If it gets really cold at my house I will close the coop up (the little coop door and the big human door) but leave the vents on the top open so that the moisture can get out. I also run a light during the really cold parts of the winter...

So sorry to hear that you are having troubles. I lost two hens one right before June with an egg prolapse (was a Gold Comet and laid monster eggs unfortunately :( ) and a second one towards the end of June due to the heat. I think I am going to be keeping a bunch of the girl babies that I...

I am so glad it's going to be cooler and we will get a little bit of rain I don't even think the girls will complain. lol

I lost one full grown chicken this week to the heat and some of my newly hatched chicks. They just couldn't stay cool enough with it being almost 100 out. They had water at all times and food but even with Mama to help them and tell them what to do they still got to hot and died. The hen I lost...

Hey I am just a stones throw from you in Bristol. I just put in my order for turkeys. We did a DIY coop. I would suggest looking around for lumber before you buy. We found that the prices at Home Depot were better than the local lumberyards. Our coop which holds around 21 chickens cost around...

My sister had the same problem with her hens. She had too many roos and they were being too pushy with the hens. She moved all but 3 roos for 25 hens and now they are laying like crazy. So there is hope.

I actually kept my coops closed other than the chick door today. That way most of the warmth would stay in the coop. I haven't had any issues with too much moisture so far. Now frozen water buckets...that's another story lol. If your shavings are damp I would try and change them out so that your...

I know that my coop has good ventilation but I still have two Roosters with frostbite on their combs. I tried using the vaseline but it really didn't seem to help since it seemed a little worse the next really cold day. My solution was to Leave the two top vents open in the underside of the roof...

Quote: Mine do not seem to mind the snow. They have been out scratching around in it like normal. It could be the breed as this year’s group like the snow better than my older hens. We have been lucky so far with little snow as of yet. If this weather pattern keeps up we may have an early...

Quote: that's probably frostbite, you should search on the forum for how to treat it i put bag balm on my rooster's comb to try to keep from getting frostbite on the coldest of nights. supposed to be some very cold temps middle of next week, sorry, it's not spring yet Wasn't sure if it was...

Mine all seem to be doing okay with the cold. I do have a light in the coop but pretty much that's more for me so I can see what I'm doing when I'm in there lol. They really are not big fans of the snow though I had to coax them to come back in for the night because they didn't want to walk back...

I do Poulin as well and the girls seem to like it. I did do Blue Seal for a while but they only sell their layer in mash at the store near me and the chickens will over eat on that because they don't feel full. I like the Poulin better.

Mine wanted nothing to do with it and stayed holed up in their coops for the day. Not sure if they are going to go out this winter lol. I made them some warm noodles this afternoon to try and warm them up poor things.

Quote: I sure will! Will you remember to get back to me or should I put you on my Spring contact list? I will get back to you come spring. Was just talking to my husband telling him that I was worried because we got so many boys and only 2 girls in our last hatching. They are a similar size...
