Can anyone explain this to me?
" This bird’s black colour tends to absorb light, so we recommend brighter or more intense lighting for top egg production."
Why would the colour of feathers on a bird have anything to do with it? I thought all birds benefit from extra light in the winter, not...
Thanks Mrs. K.
@KDOGG331 Those meat birds look awesome. Did you get any feedback in a PM? I like the sound of the Black ranger, but I bet I cant have them shipped north of the border.
:-(
I'm using the big sack of Layer Feed that my local farmer/feed store sells. (They only sell the one brand, its legit) Its non-medicated. I switched the ladies last week from the "pullet grower". (2 of 5 aren't laying yet so the week before i was mixing half and half. )They usually free range all...
So I just found this, it was from Feather Face, my muffed bird. She started laying last week, and has laid me 5 eggs in 7 days, nice green ones, that have some brown flecks in them, and they have less sheen than my other EE (or AM or whatever they are). Hers are always more matte feeling, maybe...
Thanks for that photo @lomine , Thats really helpful. I am leaning more and more towards having meat birds instead of dual purpose, since you just get so much more meat, and I could keep them separate (from "pet" status of the egg birds). Im not sure I can eat my friends, so if there are many...
Speaking of sidetracking.... Holy Cluck! Just got a giant egg!! (Brown egg in the middle is from the store- Extra large free run brown egg). Ive never seen an egg this large....!!!
I think how many birds you can keep will depend on all those factors, and only you can answer that question for yourself. I know that my family of 5 can make do with a chicken a week. (my 3 kids are all small) We wont go "whole hog" this year, as Id like to start slow, so probably 40 meat birds...
Hey, thanks! And thanks to all for the input on breeds and how to get a flock that is self sustaining. Its all been really interesting for me. I'm really excited to breed my girls, to figure out who lays what, how many etc. Try and get different coloured eggs, birds etc.. Are there apps to track...
I paid $20 Canadian each, so I guess about $15- $16 usd. I guess I will be getting a lot more blue/green eggs than I thought!
Here is the latest assortment of eggs pic, the long and pointy teal one is new. the other turqoise-y ones are from the golden headed one with the thick neck and brown...
And here are the egg pics. Eggs are sort of a teal or turquoise color. Is that considered blue or green? You're right "junebuggena"!! I googled Barnevelder, and thats exactly her. She is the boldest of my group, but I dont think has started laying yet, so not at the top of the pecking order...
Ok, I thought I'd post a few pics.
Breeder told me the following: Buff Orpington, Blue Orpington, Partridge Rock, 3 Auracauna (green eggs) and a Maran.
Havent seen any eggs that are dark brown. I have buff, and teal coloured eggs so far.
Do these look like Auracauna or EE? I was told they are...
Yes, Ontario- profile has been updated! :-) So right now it says -15C or 5F if you're south of the border. Cold for both me and the chickens!! This will be my first real winter in 20 years! (lived in Los Angeles and Vancouver since last century!)
I have a question for Lazy Gardener- why no...
Hi folks. So sorry about the "ugly" comment, didn't mean to offend, but I do believe I'm entitled to an opinion.
I will check out the you tube video you mentioned! I love hearing how everyone does things- this is great!
I think I will try and post some pics of my birds. There are a few Im not...
Hello Everyone!
Thanks so much for all the ideas, tips, suggestions.
Song of Joy- We live in southern Ontario. (about an hour from Toronto) We would roast or BBQ our chickens only.
Yes I will do lots of reading and taking of notes. I'm sure we'll make a ton of mistakes, but we got into this to...
Thanks for the replies.
I've never eaten a chicken that wasn't from a store, sadly. But I used to buy free range organic chicken from the butcher (when i was a city girl). I can only assume that the flavour of home grown chicken would far surpass Costco or Walmart meat.(?)
We have 27 acres, so...
