You're right... having to heat 250 birds as opposed to 2 is a much more daunting task... especially at temps below 0°F. Though I have a 5yo hen that is still outside right now and doesn't seem to mind one bit...
Update:
Currently 0°F-17.7°C outside, and 5 girls are still sleeping outside. The 40w bulb couldn't handle the sudden drop in temps (that's 25-30° lower than yesterday), so I'll have to up the wattage to keep the waterer from freezing, but that's all they have so far.
Are people suffering from the "Mom's cold" syndrome? Momma's cold, so the kids have to be cold too, and must must must put on a sweater???

Seriously. We got down to 5°F night before last, and I still had 7 girls sleeping outside. The only heat in the coop is a 40 watt bulb facing the waterer to keep it from freezing... that's it. Girls are fine.
