I just picked up one of those plug-thermostats, and I'm going back for more! You're right... having to heat 250 birds as opposed to 2 is a much more daunting task... especially at temps below 0°F. Though I have a 5yo hen that is still outside right now and doesn't seem to mind one bit...

Update: Currently 0°F-17.7°C outside, and 5 girls are still sleeping outside. The 40w bulb couldn't handle the sudden drop in temps (that's 25-30° lower than yesterday), so I'll have to up the wattage to keep the waterer from freezing, but that's all they have so far.
