Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

That works, or you can hang them just outside of their hutch. Either morning or evening. You want it to remain light somewhere in the 6 AM to 9 PM range, but as long as you're reasonably consistent, you can make it fit your schedule. You want to extend their day. They should still get 8...

Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

It doesn't have to be direct sunlight. You can use LEDs. Coturnix quail are very prolific layers, but are still technically seasonal layers that normally take a break during the winter. Giving them enough light to keep them laying year 'round will shorten their lives, but if eggs are your...

Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

Did you ever start giving them supplemental light? If you're in the northern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter, and they need at least 14 hours per day to lay regularly. That doesn't mean that there won't be exceptions. Last year I had one girl continue to lay every day all winter...

Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

You should either let him live with them or get rid of him entirely. Quail don't like change, so there will be some changes to their behaviour, but the adjust within a week or two.

Coturnix quail are terrible parents for the most part. Even if the eggs are fertile, they won't sit on them (go broody), so they won't hatch. If you don't want fertile eggs, have you considered getting rid of the male? They will still lay eggs without him.

Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

If these are coturnix hens, you don't have to worry about them raising their own chicks. While it's possible for them to go broody in an aviary setting, it's not common. Since they are in an aviary, you might look for buried eggs. They will bury them if the dirt is loose enough.

Only one egg daily in a four hen flock

Coturnix quail usually start to lay at around 6 weeks, but it can take longer in fall or winter if they're not getting enough light. Was this during winter? @HutchButch I would check two things. One, make sure they're getting at least 14 hours of light per day. Two, make sure that nothing is...
