Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Well, the chicks are pretty delicate when they are young, but overall I like them. Very well natured and super quirky personalities (in a good way). I haven't introduced them to the rest of the flock yet as I was advised to do this sometime after they reached 5 months of age because of their...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Sorry! I have been off the forum for a while - busy working on the other side of the country. They are growing well. I don't have great updated photos - but these are cellphone photos that were taken about two weeks ago. Here is the largest cockerel "Thor" (smooth) - the membrane cover is...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Three and three - I only stuck the photos up for four of them in the last post. Will get better photos of them this next week. One of the pullets is starting to fall behind a bit. She's always had a bit of a limp, but we'll see how she is able to move around as she grows.

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

They are all doing well - I will post updated photos next weekend as they’ve grown quite a bit (the weather hasn’t been very good so I’ve been a bit lax on the documenting and photo taking). In the mean time, here are a couple photos from last weekend! Poor lighting, but it will give an idea...

Yes they are! I’m really happy with the progress over the last two weeks 😊

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

The "Almost 2 Months" Update! Well, we're almost at the two month mark and I think we finally have some answers on what sexes these little ones are. They have grown a lot in the last couple of weeks and are starting to look a bit more like chickens. Chick #1 Lavender Wooly "Freki" (Pullet)...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Oh nice! And yes, I will definitely be keeping the cockerels for a while as I want to see them mature. I've (fingers crossed) never lost a cockerel/rooster yet and just have to watch the hen/rooster ratio when my flock is together in the winter - as they are confined to the coop and run during...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Thanks 💕 I love the array of colours and other differences from this landrace - the lavender fibro ones have a bit of a spooky look with those dark pooling eyes. Perfect for this time of year!

I will probably keep a small flock - a cockerel and as many pullets as I have from this hatch (and perhaps a second hatch down the road). I'm certainly interest in the conservation of Swedish Hedemora, so will be breeding them in the future for sure.

Chick #1 Lavender Wooly "Freki" (Pullet?) - One of pair of wolves that accompany Odin in Norse mythology, name meaning covetous or avaricious Chick #2 Lavender Wooly "Geri" (Cockerel?) - The second of the pair of wolves that accompany Odin in Norse mythology, name meaning greedy Chick #3...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Learning and Updates - Week #5 Hedemora chicks grow slowly and are delicate for the first few weeks of life... We've had no more losses since the little black and white chick passed, but one of the lavenders seems to have either had a hip injury or its hip has developed wrong. It is managing...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

A bit more of a sad update - we lost chick #7 yesterday. This individual did not thrive from the beginning and rapidly began deteriorating yesterday morning - all the others are doing well and it seemed to be from some underlying condition (which sometimes happens). This is the first chick we...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Thanks! I have read through this and one other longer thread that seems to be relatively inactive now. :) I'm hoping to compile an article after raising them to help with any possible breed specific concerns or problems I encounter.

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Learning and Advice - Week #1 It works better to raise your from Hedemora chicks separately from other breeds... I've now had the Swedish Hedemora chicks for just over half a week. One thing that has become quite obvious is that they do not thrive when raised with any larger breed chicks. I...

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Thanks! I know Hedemora aren't a terribly popular breed (well, landrace), but I figure it will be nice for those who do have them - or are planning to get them - to have more information about them on the forum.

Raising Swedish Hedemora on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Hi All! I'm embarking on a journey raising Swedish Hedemora at the base of the Cape Breton Highlands in Nova Scotia! I have been long fascinated by this landrace and think they will be well suited to the climate here. A few days ago I received seven little balls of fluff, so now begins the fun...
