    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

My vet is going to be on the forum as soon as I get her an email with the link. I'm sure she'd be highly interested in connecting with Dr. Shivaprasad. My babies are well. Almost moved into Casa de Pea, they've had to mingle with the chickens while the aviary is being finished. They won't...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

As Casa de Pea continues to be built..... I got a call yesterday from the vet. I gave the bird to her frozen, which, I admit, was a mistake. It's tough putting a dead "pet" in the home refrigerator and having a 5 year old rummaging through the fridge. "Mom, what's in the bag?" Ya know...

I appreciate your observations. If you go back to where I posted the pics, and the attached commentary, you'll get up to date on the coop, and the aviary. Note the pics, as well. The aviary has nothing on it, and has no roof structure. I hope you'll appreciate what was accomplished in a day, and...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

They continue to get better. I haven't weighed them yet today, but they were down in weight yesterday, what I think, due to dehydration. We put out yesterday while we worked on our version of the Casa de Pea, and they hydrated themselves. So... Here's our version of Casa de Pea. This is ONE...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

Thanks for all of the input. It seems as though we're out of the woods (fingers crossed). Our bathroom has been satisfactorily destroyed, and the birds are eating, drinking, and gaining weight. We had a lengthy discussion with the vet yesterday, and it turns out that the "Board Certified Vet"...

Not when you get "CHERRY" flavored Metro. We gots the hook-ups, yo. Interesting facts about stopping an antibiotic too soon. I did not know that. Pics as proof... Those bottles in the background? Our prescriptions.... Here's one from last night after getting tucked in:

The Baytril was the drug that was 1st prescribed. Metro was the "last resort", but the bird died before we got there. Thanks for your contribution. It's appreciated, and thanks for the condolences. My gf did joke.... "It's a matter of time before I bring a horse inside".... No. No it's not.

I absolutely agree that the bird was dying when we were at the vet. Would he have lived had he been given Metro at the vet that afternoon, maybe, but I don't think he would have. He was getting worse as we sat and consulted with the vet (we talked for about 30 mins.) You don't sound insensitive...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

Some of you guys should be worth your weight in gold. Incredible insight, and it is much appreciated. Just so we can re-cap, and look at this objectively, here's where we are as of this am. The birds were brought into house (I swore I'd never allow the horses or birds in the house...), put...

Thanks for the support. We have learned A LOT over the past two days. I am confused about the babies on the ground thing. Could you clarify this? What do you DO with babies younger than 6 mos? Where do you keep them, and house them? What if they're with mom? I have a complete respect for...

I knew that this post was coming... The you're a dumb noob, making dumb noob mistakes, and it sucks that your bird died, but we told ya so... post. I shouldn't even reply to this post because it has all of the hallmarks of a troll post, but, I'll reply out of courtesy.... You need a hug. That's...

I've been reading this page off and on all day. What a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for the share.

Horses, even foals, have NOTHING on birds. This is something that has to be seen, and unfortunately experienced, to be appreciated (or respected?) It will get better with experience. We've got 25 years with horses, and less than 1 with birds.

We're meeting Friday (tomorrow) to talk about the necropsy. We talked briefly about tube feeding them during our meeting yesterday, and I think we can do a live specimen demo, which is always better than trying it on our own.

Good question. A couple of reasons.... 1. The vet prescribed Baytril last night, and the Metro was the "last resort". The bird died last night hours after being injected with the Baytril (sub-q), so the results of the Baytril was inconclusive. After reading here, I was convinced that if I don't...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

So.... Wow what a tough couple of days. I carefully watched the other 2 today and when they balked at eating this afternoon, I went to pick up the Metronidozol. When I got home, they were nestled closely to the heat lamp we have outside (it's 25 minutes each way into town). They have since had...

Thanks for all of the responses. The second one died last night after spending the day fighting with the illness. We started him on Terramyacin early yesterday, and went to the vet at 4pm. He was doing well, and then not so well, doing well, and not so well, and at the vet, he started the...

Thanks for the reply. We have a 2nd sick bird. Not as sick, but walked into the pen this am and observed him laying down, slow to rise, and not wanting to get out and about. I grabbed him, stood him up, and he stood, but his wings were droopy, and he was lethargic. We grabbed him up and started...

    Need help.. Sick & lethargic

She died this afternoon, but so that I may know how to address this in the future, I'd like to step through this in the event the other 3 are sick. I got to her late, and immediately started electrolytes and water. She had runny yellowish poop. Wings were drooped. Laying down. Gaping every...
