Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Cute babies, but what a bummer you only hatched 6 keets. I see at least a couple Pieds

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Oh... sorry, I misread your post, I thought you meant more keets had hatched... I was rooting for you to be able to expand your flock significantly If there are no pipped eggs currently you could get away with quickly candling them and checking for internal pips/movement/signs of life in the...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Glad you had a few more hatch! Even with perfect incubator/hatcher conditions some keets just aren't strong enough to hatch... could be genetics, could be the health or diet of the flock the eggs came from, possibly too much inbreeding... who knows. It's common for have "quitters" in every hatch...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

5 Acre... if you completely cleaned out the nest, the Hens probably won't lay there again (they will think a predator cleaned it out, and move elsewhere). You might get lucky if you go put 6 or so of the older looking eggs back to "salt" (bait) the nest to keep them laying there tho (candle them...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

I've never used flax seed for newly hatched keets... but it will probably be fine as long as it's ground extra fine, they can't digest whole seeds tho. You can also give them scrambled or crumbled hard boiled eggs for some extra protein too. Just a couple days on the substitute diet won't hurt...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

I have Turkey poults and Guinea keets hatching in my cabinet hatcher right now... it has a big huge clear door on it but I can't see much of what's going on in there and it's frustrating as heck . It needs viewing windows on the sides! LOL.

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Sometimes, depending on how the eggs were stored, or if they were in a nest being warmed by the sun etc the eggs can start to develop a little bit before being set, or they could have been in warmer areas of the incubator that made them develop faster... so they will be the ones that hatch...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

They can go 24-48 hrs in the hatcher w/o food and water just fine (think about how day-old keets and chicks etc do fine being shipped w/o food and water... they've just absorbed the remnants of the yolk that will sustain them)...they won't like it tho, lol and may get rowdy and loud in there...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

I'd separate the batches when you put the 1st batch of eggs into lock-down, or sooner if you have the 2nd 'bator set up and get it stabilized. The newer batch of developing eggs really shouldn't have the high humidity the hatching eggs need for lock-down tho (which should be at least 70% for...

Congrats to both of you girls with the Guinea lovin' Hubbies! Good luck with your hatches... I expect updates and pics!

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

38 eggs... so probably more than one Hen was laying in that nest, unless the Hen went back to an older nest of abandoned eggs. The eggs with dark spots may have been alive and developing... but if they went completely cold, they are probably dead now if the Hen did not get back on the nest...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Were the eggs cold, or still a little warm? Are you sure she's been on the nest, or is she still laying fresh eggs in it each day? I would candle the eggs now, to see if they have started to develop. What kind of incubator did you put the eggs in? With a fan or without a fan to circulate the...

The flashlight I use (and used in the egg pics I posted) is a Streamlight Strion C4 LED. It's rechargeable, and it was over $150.. lol. I didn't buy it specifically for candling, but it works really good.

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

It is better to wait a week to candle Guinea eggs, or even 10 days... mainly because the Guinea eggs shells are so thick it's hard to see what's going on inside the eggs. Use a super bright flashlight (LED), in total darkness at day 7 and you should see veins and a very obvious reddish color...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Is the styrofoam cooler big enough for a turner? If so just be quick when you move the eggs into the turner and then set the turner in the incubator... it will probably take a long time for the temp and humidity to recover since the turner is cold (or room temp), and pretty much all the of the...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

I've only hatched Silkie chicks, and I didn't hatch my chicks and keets together at the same time...so you'd have to ask someone who hatches your breed of chicks to find out if they can handle the higher humidity for lockdown. Maybe aim for the happy medium between the 2, but I wouldn't go any...

Picking up Guinea eggs tomorrow for the incubator

Guinea eggs are pretty forgiving, and easy to incubate. Just try to keep your temp steady thru incubation, keep your humidity around 45-50%, be sure to turn them 3-5 times a day (or use an automatic egg turner), and then for lock down my keets seem to hatch much better with the humidity bumped...

Congrats, and good luck! Be sure to feed the keets high protein starter feed (Turkey/Pheasant/Game Bird starter), they need a lot more protein than chicks do.
