Actually no, lol. Jujube apparently just decided now what a good time to start. Some of the other birds in that pen are actually laying too - I know my fibro EE is and I think one or two of the ACs are too.
I am so very sorry that it did not make it and was already dead when you opened it :hugs There was nothing further you could do, it sounds like it died awhile ago.
Personally I would open it up just enough so that you can see in there to verify that it's internally pipped. If it is, I would open it up and apply the coconut oil (or whatever you're using).
For now just hang tight :) If it is a Call, it may need end up needing help to hatch, especially with it being shipped. You may want to take a read through this article, just in case: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/guide-to-assisted-hatching-for-all-poultry.72886/
Pet quality Calls...
It's hard to say without being able to see the egg in person. Is it peeping at you? This is the 25th day, so if it was a Call it would make sense that it internally pipped now.
If you're seeing a shadow in the air cell and it's peeping at you, I would say it's okay to do, but trust your...
Instructions for a safety hole:
To start with, candle your egg to see if the chick has internally pipped. An internal pip will look like a triangular shadow in the air cell. Below is a picture of an internally pipped chick.
When it is time for the safety hole, candle the egg to determine the...
Mallards would be the match size-wise, and if you clip their wings they won't fly away. Calls also fly. I keep my Calls in with full size ducks and don't have problems, though, so if you want a larger breed it should be fine. It's actually the Calls that boss the big ones around here :lol...
I'm not saying you don't have Calls. I also said, if you read back, that some Calls lay green eggs. However, not all Calls lay green eggs. That's all I said.
Yeah, my welshies which are mallard derived don't lay green eggs and I just started getting my first Call eggs and they aren't green either. In fact, most of the eggs I got from Ravyn weren't green. Nor were the other Call eggs I bought from a different breeder.
Most of the Call eggs I've had have been white :) I have had a couple green ones too, but it depends on the duck - some lay green, some lay white.
I too am very interested to see what hatches :pop At this point I'm pretty sure it's not going to be a chicken, just based on how long the egg has...
Yep, even if it lives with your chickens it needs a duck. Kinda like how you wouldn't be happy living with chimpanzees - even though they're pretty similar to us, we wouldn't be happy living with them.
If it is a duck, you're gonna need another duck :) Ducks need friends of their own kind. You might want to start hunting down another duckling.
Calls hatch at day 26, so you want to put this egg into lockdown on day 23.
:pop
Any chance you can post a picture of the egg? And, I would ask the breeder what type of bantam duck she raises, since some hatch before day 28, and you'll want to be prepared :)
