Thank you, that's what I thought and that's what I told them. They then went so far as to imply that because mine don't hatch on day 23 that they much be mixed breeds or have gotten a breed mixed in somewhere down the line.
A question for all in here who are hatching welsh harlequins, what day of incubation are they hatching on for you? Someone has said to me that they are supposed to take only 23 days to hatch. I have never had any duck hatch that early of any breed.
Funny how that's different! I wonder how that happened, that silver became accepted in one place and not gold, and then the opposite happened elsewhere.
Yes, but by the standard they shouldn't be. In fact, gold phase isn't an accepted color at all, only silver is.
Bill sexing is only 70 to 90 percent accurate, depending on what line you have, and only one picture is showing, but this one, if the sexing is accurate, is a female.
All breeds were made from other breeds. They're not considered hybrids once they breed true and are accepted by the APA. Welsh Harlequins breed true and as such as are a real breed. So what you hatch will be the same as the parents.
Yours may not be bred to color standard - a head color like that and speckling on the breast is normal on a WH female. Here's holderread's gallery, where you can see examples of ducks bred to the standard:

The OP posted another thread about this and I guessed that 2, 3, and 4 were drakes and 1 was a female. Then they used the voice method to confirm the genders and it seems that's the case :)
The ability to tell the gender apart by bill color is lost a few days after hatch and all their bills turn that color :) Then, as they age, they actually reverse, and the females' bills turn dark green/black and the males' turn a light yellow/green color.
No, from what you say their mother was a welsh harlequin and their father was a mallard. This would make them WH/Mallard crosses. They wouldn't be called any breed at all because they aren't purebred. They could be called crosses, mixed breed, or mutts. It's just like you wouldn't call a dog...
Silver is my favorite. Plus it's the only color accepted by the APA so if you want to breed to the standard and be able to show, you need to have silvers :) Mine are all silver.
I have eggs hatching right now! Go duckies go :jumpy
Oh I know! Sorry, I wasn't actually disagreeing with you. It's important to know that you're risking injuring or even killing a duckling before you try it so you can be prepared and take that into account before you try.
You definitely can if your technique is not correct, i.e. pressing down on the stomach instead of gently spreading the vent. So it's definitely something to keep in mind if you want to try it. That said, I vent sex and I've never caused a duckling or gosling harm, and I'm self-taught.
I can help here. Firstly, gold phase welsh harlequins are not accepted by the APA at this time, so while it would be possible for a gold phase to have great type and confirmation, the color isn't accepted and the best it could do as far as showing is best of all other, I believe.
The coloring...
Just popping in to see if anyone might have some non hatchery stock WH eggs I can buy. Last winter I unfortunately lost my flock to a predator and this year I started over with an order from Holderread's. Shipping across the entire country wasn't easy on the little guys and I lost all but two...
