    Opinion on nesting boxes

Update!!! I now have all 4 of my chickens laying eggs... I started this month with only 1 layer and now have 4, how awesome is that!! Anyway after I finally convinced my 2nd layer to lay her egg in the nest box the 3rd one to start followed her lead! Then a few days later my 1st layer took the...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Just as I suspected, no eggs yesterday but first thing this morning my 2 girls left me an egg... my NH was even so nice to lay it IN the nest box, yay. I'll take 1/2 maybe my BA will catch on as she sees my NH use it. And here's hoping the other 2 get the idea as well! :) I'm so happy.

    Opinion on nesting boxes

I know right? I don't think I'll get that lucky again to catch them both in time to move them if they aren't using the box. It's funny that they were on the same laying schedule 2 days in a row, they both laid about 4pm yesterday so I'd be surprised if they both laid again today, may not see an...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Well I'm calling today a partial success. I just went out there to check on my girls thinking it was about laying time. I found the one I know for sure is a layer and the one I suspected is a layer in a corner on the side of the coop. The NH was laying down and the BA walked over and kinda...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

I had golf balls to and those didn't seem to work so we shall see if the ceramic egg does the trick. We will see what tomorrow brings. At least today's eggs were right outside the nest box, maybe they will get in the box tomorrow!

    Opinion on nesting boxes

I've thought about it but not too keen on leaving eggs out too long in this heat... it's still in the 100s here in AZ! I have a ceramic egg in the box hoping that will convince them.

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Alright I'll give it some time. At least they were checking it out I guess. Bad thing is I had my husband help me move the coop to a different spot in the yard. I thought they would get more shade and the coop was totally in the shade for a good amount of the day and then I went out there a bit...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Ok here I am back at it... We have a 2nd layer who followed the 1st ones lead and laid in the corner next to the next boxes. I decided to take the dresser nest boxes out and forget about that idea. I really saw no interest whatsoever in that set up. I decided to just cut an opening in a big...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Alright I give. Penguin will lay her egg where she pleases and nothing I do will change her mind. I added perches to the boxes, used golf balls, put up curtains, I even held her in there and talked to her and pet her and she still refuses. I'm going to chalk it up to her still not knowing...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Thanks aart, I will try those things. She hasn't looked in the drawer nest boxes only the box I put on the side so I really think that's where she would prefer to lay but something is keeping her from actually stepping in. I will try a cinder block in front of it.

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Ughhhh I have no idea what else to do. My Penguin insists on laying on the floor, usually in the middle of the coop. She's laid 7 eggs in 10 days which is absolutely awesome. The 6th egg she must have laid at night while roosting because it was right under where she sits and it must have broke...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Thanks mamadawn! I hope they like it. My BA should be laying late this afternoon according to the little pattern she has going so we shall see. If it's even in the dishpans I tucked in the corner I'll be happy!

Thanks aart, I will work on that next but I will probably need hubby's help on that. I'm not that good with tools even though I try sometimes.

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Alright it's done, took me an hour but it's done and I'm proud. And now I'm just sitting outside waiting for my girls to try the boxes out. before during after I don't have straw yet so just used wood chips. I put the dish pans in the bottom drawer and they are in there snug, the top drawer I...

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Thanks mamadawn, I plan on working on my nest boxes today for sure and will take your suggestions. I am assuming what you said did happen, I know the girls had been checking out the next boxes because at first I found a few feathers in them but one flipped and wood chips everywhere so I can only...

A art unfortunately it won't fit in that spot but she hasn't even uses that same spot for the past 3 eggs! :/

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Well I haven't gotten around to fixing the nest boxes but my BA has now laid 5 eggs in 7 days and none have been in the boxes! :/ I am definitely gonna work on the boxes tomorrow and see if I can get her to like them before the other 4 start taking after her lead when they start!

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Nope... looks like a cat litter box, the ones with the top which I did think about using but went for repurposing an old dresser we got for free from someone.

    Opinion on nesting boxes

Thanks jetdog, definitely need to make some adjustments to my boxes then. I need to get the hens to lay in the boxes because laying on the ground of the coop just won't do with 5 kids in and out of there doing chores.
