The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

haha, I'm at my limit with 9. I live in a neighborhood with an HOA so I'm technically not even supposed to have chickens. My Chickadee is a Rhode Island Red or Production Red. She has actually been getting on the roost with the big girls herself for the past 4 nights. I've had to put her up...

that stinks. If it makes you feel better I only had 1 hatch in Dec so I bought it 1 friend and then hatched more in january. The one that I hatched in Dec turned out to be a roo so I sold him and now the one I bought is super lonely because it doesn't fit in with my 4 1 yr olds or my 4 that I...

haha, you don't have to be sorry. It stinks because I really wanted a white silkie and his coloring is so awesome but I've had him pegged for a roo for a LONG time now. I think I'm 2 for 2 on guessing which of mine have been roos early on even when people have thought pullet. Maybe next time...

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

so I posted this a few days ago and also said this chicken was 14 weeks old but I just recounted and it's actually only 13 weeks. Here are some updated pics. I'm like 98% sure it's a roo but it hasn't crowed. Just want to get some opinions before I line up a buyer for him.

with that mug you say pullet? I really have it pegged for a roo but it hasn't crowed so I'm not certain.

Peppercorn does look like a roo to me. Acorn may possibly be one too. I can't speak for all the others.

I would definitely keep an eye on the first one you posted. It's comb does look bigger. Do you happen to notice if it stands up straighter than the other ones?

Just fyi that's a comb not it's wattles. The wattles are the things that grow on either side of its beak. That does look like a very big comb for such a little chick. It would be helpful to see a picture of one of the other chicks for comparison.

ya that would be great! You will definitely know when they squat. Some of mine even stomp their feet when they squat, it's so funny. Yours must just really not mind being pet because all mine run away as quickly as they can even though I hold them every day.

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

I don't really have much experience with roosters besides having mine for 4 days after he crowed but I don't believe roosters squat. A pullet squatting is basically it's way of being submissive if a rooster wants to mate with it. Anyway, that's my understanding of it.

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

based on their darker color and the small comb and wattles at 17 weeks I would be inclined to say they are pullets that are not too far from laying you a lovely egg. I'm not an expert though but that would be my guess. When you go up to them and put your hand over their backs do they squat down...

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

It's hard to really tell what their combs look like from the angle of those pictures but I would say by their barring they do look like roos to me. But they don't appear to have very much of a comb or wattles nor do they appear red so it's hard to say with 100% certainty. Here is my barred rock...

thanks, I really think she is but I have had a few people tell me otherwise. Here's a pic of Pepe' and Chickadee the day before he was sold.

sadly, yes it was. We renamed him Pepe'. Peppermint didn't seem to fit him anymore. His buddy Chickadee (hopefully a pullet) has been a bit lonely. I feel bad for her. She doesn't quite fit in with the babies but I'm afraid to put her in with the big girls. We bought her so Peppermint would have...
