    Well first off, coturnix don't go broody hardly at all. They lay good, and need a good GBS.

    My cages are all 2 feet high. For bobwhites that jump a lot I use trampoline netting or screen strung across the roof so they won't get hurt. If your coturnix do this a lot that might help.

    You mean what holds the wire? The shingles are mostly under the feeder to catch the spilled feed but they can still get on them...

    I put shingles in my cages for them to get on, just take them out and hose them off. With bare wood poop will build up and it becomes hard to get off.

    Yes, it will get nasty if any moisture gets in.

    You have to clean the wood, and 1/2x1 coons can stick a paw through. They can still get the ones on the wire. Even with half inch they can. I put welded wire around the legs.

    Yes, the poop will fall through, unless it gets really cold. Then it freezes on contact.

    I use 1/2 inch wire on all my pens, raccoons can grab your bird's legs and pull down on them. I suggest 1/2 inch wire. I learn't the hard way with 1/2 by 1 inch...
