Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Well I bought 3 Sapphire Gems at Tractor Supply (via Hoovers Hatchery). They were supposed to be pullets and sex-linked pullets at that. One out of the 3 is.....drumroll.....obviously not a pullet. :) Have since googled and read other people have had the same issue with Hoover's "sex linked"...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

I bought three Sapphire Gem chicks at TSC (only choice other than straight run Marans). They are a trendy new sex-link hybrid but from Plymouth Rock stock and very docile/sweet (the gentle temperament with other birds is what sold me on them plus the stunning blue color). The broody was...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Thanks! I bought some at TSC last week for the broody. Got lucky as they had a 4 chick minimum but then a lady came by to "just look". Course it was easy to talker her into buying 2 chicks (she has a farm with other chicks/birds at home). Since she only wanted 2 I also talked her into adding my...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

I wouldn't worry about not having vaccines. Just give them medicated feed and keep their stress level low. The Marek's vaccine is bad news anyway (it allows birds to spread super deadly forms of it). Doesn't matter in a closed flock but I would never buy a Marek's vaccinated bird from anywhere...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Yeah my bantam hen wanted to hatch eggs but I already have 2 extra roosters so we don't need more! On the upside I just rehomed one of my super tame bantam boys last weekend. Went to a good friend that has a dozen layers so he was one VERY happy boy!

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Ivermectin is effective against the avian flu and also commonly used in chickens. Plus I live in Georgia, only a handful of wild birds have tested positive and with zero domestic flocks. Since temps are already reaching 80 regularly I would expect that to slow the spread of the virus since it...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Yup they do which is why I have paid cash when purchasing before. My small flock (mostly oeg bantams) are cherished pets and even if they did get exposed I would hope/expect at least some may survive/recover if given the chance. Once they recuperate they are no longer an infection risk to...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

So I guess my state is just about the only one that requires it? Guess it is for the poultry industry. Well that doesn't make me feel any better as they probably take the culling of flocks more seriously than other states too.

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Thanks! I only planned to buy 2, the broody is tiny and couldn't cover 4-6 full sized chicks for long. I may just find a middle-man to make the purchase for me.

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

I am worried about the state tracking down chick buyers to cull their whole flock. As you said, it is "everywhere" anyway so killing every flock that may or may not have been exposed makes no sense to me at all.

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

I know the feds are running the programs to test all flocks in the area of a confirmed case. I assumed that meant all states had chick registries too but I guess not. Poultry is a big industry in my state so that may be why they require it here.

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

In my state we have had to provide an address for years. The state keeps a record so they can hunt down all chick buyers if the hatchery has an incident of avian influenza. Was gonna buy a couple of chicks at the feed store next week for a broody hen but they are getting them from Hoovers in...

Have you bought chicks from Tractor Supply this spring?

Question for anyone that has recently bought chicks from tractor supply. In my state (and probably all states) we are asked to provide our name and address when purchasing chicks. Does TSC ask for I.D.? Or do you just fill out your name and address yourself? Do they still have a 6 chick minimum?
