I'm ID'ing from the `spearpoint' marking on head. The guy was `spaded out' in a threat display.
Understandable but there is more things to look at on a snake to properly identify it. Here's a link that will give you some info on eastern hognose snakes (what that snake in the photo is...

Snakes are opportunists. They eat what they can usually. When your a snake you don't get to be picky most the time. Its eat what crosses in front of you or don't eat at all for lord knows how long. That's why snakes are able to go months with out food. If they had to eat as often as...

I've considered that, I have a few friends localy that has some. But I decided to just stick with the culled chickens since she likes them so much. Its much simpler for me, makes me feel better about culling them. Atlease they arent going to waste.

Try getting your hands on some African Fur Rats.
I gaurantee your ball will eat them.
Careful tho, they are not legal in some states as live.
You can order frozen ones off kingsnake.com .

People here are being led to believe that a kingsnake is going to hunt down and kill/eat venomous snakes.
That is not the case.
Thru my experience, only 1 species of Lampropeltis actively and routinely hunts and eats snakes- L. splendida- as a wild snake.
The only influence that...
I think one of the things we have to remember, is each snake has its on individual personality just like we people do. Where some may prefer lizards over snakes, another may prefer snakes over lizards. I have a ball python that refuses to eat rats or mice. I feed it culled chicks.
And nature is...

Ive raised western and tri colored hognose snakes in the past for a few years. I can say that some do bite and are agressive. Ive been bit a few times, no real damage since I didnt allow it to bite me long enough to get to the rear fangs. Ive been chased by them as well. lol yes stop...
It is indeed a hognose snake. They look a lot like vipers or rattlers. Really cool snakes actually. I use to have a pair of western hognose snakes and a tri colored hognose. They will eat your chicks but they are not that harmful to humans. They have rear fangs which are mostly used for popping...

I wish more people felt the same way. I don't mind venomous ones either, they just startle me some times. To be honest most people don't know it but your not very likely to die or loose a limb from a copperhead. Friend of mine in Georgia raises and breeds them. He has never went to the...

I haven't ran across any this year. Or ever for that matter. The photo in this thread was taken in Georgia. I cant speak for all of Tennessee though. I live in the South eastern part.
Why shoot them at all? Could simply relocate them.
The speckled king in my pic is a friend's snake. He was feeding it a DOR (dead on road) copperhead. He actually works with copperheads but that's his thing not mine.
lol love him he's so cute!
I have some cats along with the wild snakes to take care of rats for me. My momma cat killed a nice fat rat the other day and let the kittens play with it for a while. I have 5 cats >.< lol. My cat's been fixed for a little while now, and the kittens will be soon...

Most snakes will hang around your coops but not cause they are after chickens. Rather.. rats, squirrels and rabbits are attracted to coops cause of the chicken feed. The snakes know this and hang around waiting for those pests.
There's quite a few different "black snakes" some king snakes come in different patterns and such, most solid black snakes are actually called Rat snakes. But there is some solid black kings too. So I suggest everyone do research on wild colubrids.
A lot of people don't know that, so don't feel bad. I love snakes, even the venomous ones. But I also have children and other pets. I rather keep a king snake in my yard to feed on the others like copperheads. They are welcomed! I've even released some in the past into my yard after rescuing...
