Bald Eagles are after our chickens

Hold on a minute...that wasn't me! I would never show a photo of an eagle that has been shot. We love the eagles...we just want to keep our chickens safe from them. Tomato cages and bird netting works for us.

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

It has worked so far, and they have "visited" the chicken run several times since then. In some of the larger areas I have put up bird netting, but that may not be practical for a totally open area. I turned my tomato cages upside down and anchored them with landscape pins. I thought the...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

The orchard is small, about 4000SF. I did put bird netting over the grid I made in the open areas and I set up tomato cages, turned over with the points up, in tight spaces so that we can actually walk around the trees to pick fruit. It is enough to deter the eagle, who has come to check it...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

Oh wait...you might think Ethel lived. She succumbed to her injuries Thursday night. She and I both fought the good fight for her, but in the end it was just too much for her. :(

Actually I lost 3. My original flock were definitely my babies and these 3 were in that flock. I have only one left. The third one died of shock. Literally she was so upset for a few days, stayed under coops, wouldn't eat, but drank water. Then on day 3 I just found her dead in the coop. I...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

Yes, it is seasonal, but this is the first season in the 4 years I've been raising chickens that the eagles or hawks killed any chickens. Not mine and not any of my neighbors' chickens. This year we have a situation going on and we don't know everything, but we know we have too many seals in...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

No, eagles are pretty clumsy on the ground. They swoop in on their prey. I thought my run was in good shape because it's an orchard, but there were a couple areas that allowed the swoop. Those areas are now covered with bird netting. Hoping an eagle doesn't get tangled up in it. Then I...

I agree. You need a covered run. We haven't needed one before this year, but things have changed for the eagles. We are going to build a covered run, but in the meantime I have created an obstacle course of upturned tomato cages and have run bird netting between the trees. Good luck!

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

Holy cow! The eagles have killed a couple of my neighbor's calves! I've put up more obstacles and bird netting. I thought I was going to get a rooster but I really don't want one. :hmm Then I heard Queen Bee, one of my RIRs, sounding the alarm out there and when I got there, here she was...

UPDATE: I posted all the devastation in the days after the eagle attack under 2 down, 1 to go. But, I thought I'd update how the tomato cages are working here. So far they are quite effective. In fact, I'm ready to buy a bunch more and take down the reflective tape grid I made. The tomato...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

So far so good on my reflective tape grid and upside down tomato cages. There is no way for the eagle to land now. And good news on Ethel. When I first looked at her wound it was an opening the size of a quarter. Today it is the size of a dime. :woot I gave her an Epsom salt soak. Yuck...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

That actually sounds pretty nice, having a dog that will protect the chickens. But another dog wont work for us. We have a rescue that doesn't play well with others, and she would never protect the chickens, quite the opposite I'm afraid. As for the eagle, our fish and wildlife people are all...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

I have Australorps, Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds. The Rhodies and the Australorps could fly over the 5 ft fence if they wanted to, but they don't seem to want to. I'm sure you know the Buffs can't fly. Up until yesterday they all felt very safe in there. ATM they are jumpy, even if...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

I thought I deleted the part about losing my favorites. Decided it was too sad to say out loud. But really Shirl was such a sweet soul. And Ethel, who is wounded but alive, is the one my first rooster nearly killed. He took off the back of her head, literally. It grew back, but there is a...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

Penny, we are practically neighbors, although I'm on the other side of the river. The net is 50" x 50", so I'm guessing you don't toss it over the tree just attach it between trees, right? I don't think that would even cover one of the trees, so tying it off to branches or setting up poles to...

Bald Eagles are after our chickens

You know what's really sad? The chicken I lost and the wounded chicken are both from my first girls. They are 4 years old and rarely lay eggs, but they are my favorites. Shirl was Well, if they are on top of it, the eagle will get them. For this reason we really have to think through the...
