It is very hard to make a suggestion, when we don't know exactly the cause of the eye infection. Whether it is respiratory related or bacterial.

As @speckledhen has suggested. Gently clean the eye - you can flush it with some saline and try to get any gunk you see out of it.
A warm moist compress may be helpful in loosening any pus/gunk that may be in it. If the eye looks like it is infected, you can apply some Terramycin eye...
