Maybe the black sex links got mixed up with the barred rocks?
That is some really messy barring. More messy than I am used to seeing. If I went by the barring, I'd say pullet. The legs are really light!
That little one is JUST like the what the heck is it category I have. Legs not dark all the way to the toes.
I don't rely on head spots alone, but that is what I'd think is a cockerel head spot if from a hatchery. It's long and does not stay in one distinct area..
I'm going to take photos...
I go by legs alone. I keep track in 3 categories. Dark legs, Light legs and what the heck is this? lol
I get about even dark and light and there are these chicks that can't be categorized. The dark legs are always girls. The middle (?) group is either gender and the light is typically boys. I...
Exactly. Cross breeds trick you, as do black sex link boys.
I've mentioned the same thing countless times so I just assumed hmalix got them from a hatchery or feed store. Sexing them based on colour/legs works very well for hatchery strains.
That last one is a girl, the one above her is a...
My Barred Rocks cannot be sexed by their head spots. I have no idea why they are different, or maybe I'm just not good at it.. They all look the same in variations to me. I've found the legs to be much more accurate :)
Check back with us when she has her wing feathers.
Given that, they are a pair, just like we guessed :)
Hatchery and feed stores usually sell production based Barred Rocks. As long as you bought them as barred rocks, the sexing tips apply. The thing is, black sex link males are barred too, and this does not work on them.
Girl! :) The dark legs are so dark that I would not peg it as a male at all. Sometimes you see some darkness to the legs on the males. I have 3 lists for each hatch: Dark legs, light legs and medium. My dark legs always end up being girls, light always boys. The medium is a toss up for either...
So we hatched out quite a few barred plymouth rocks this weekend. I haven't really done a count.. Over 20 for sure. Thinking around 25 chicks..
Anyway... Some very clear girls and boys.

I seriously need to tag them.. It's been so busy @_@
Glad I could help :) Fred is right, that is a boy.
You can see the head dot has extended down his neck a bit as a chick. Similar to the last picture I posted.
I can already spot a few males in the incubator now. Most are still not dried off. I will have to figure out a good way to mark them.
Thanks :)
I have roughly 30 of these guys hatching today and throughout the weekend (supposed to be Sunday but first chick hatched yesterday!) so I will be sexing them and marking the males to see how well this works with my new line of BPRs.
