Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

Six is more than plenty. If my 10 girls (used to be 12) all wanted to lay at the same time at best there would be space for 8: - One 4' box partitioned into 3 open nests - One 4' enclosed community box - One corner grain feeder in the feed room (put there after a girl laid an egg in that...

Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

I would think a couple of balls in each would be fine. The idea is that they think another bird has laid there so it must be a good place. They will likely gather up everything egg like in the box then lay theirs in the same place. I know some say the birds want dark and privacy when they lay...

Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

I'd go 8". I had about 4" on my "open" 3 bay nest box and they flipped a lot out so I put another 4" board on. Though, if they make a mess, they make a mess, it isn't critical And you can always add it later if you think it necessary, as I did. For what ever reason, several of mine dig...

Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

Not a bad plan, some of the girls don't take much time, but others are in there for a half hour or more. And you can always add dividers later if it seems necessary. If that is your final design, I would suggest making the board in the front taller. You want several inches of nesting material...

Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

Interesting idea but I am confused about one thing. The eggs can't roll if there is straw or shavings for the hens to nest in. How do you convince them to lay on bare hardware cloth?? I would think they wouldn't particularly want to walk on it let alone lay.

Community Nest Boxes - Let me see 'em!

Me too. Glad I read the thread before I started. I was planning to build a single outside unit, with dividers, the width of the space to the left of the chicken door (to the post the electrical box is connected to) and cut individual holes in the wall for each nest. Now I'm going to build it...
